Housefire damage means we've spent 405 days on our lawn

An international company's faulty product caused a house fire and that left us living on our front lawn for over a year.

Canterbury

Its been 405 days since my children and I were able to live in our home, instead we have been living on our front lawn. On 6 September 2019 I turned on the washing machine, took my kids to school and came home to my house on fire. It was caused by a faulty product that had been recalled, yet I had not been notified of this even though my contact details had not changed. The company whose product caused this fire agreed to repair the damage because I could not get house insurance because of existing issues fighting EQC (which are still ongoing).

Since they agreed to repair this damage I have faced nothing but delays and rising costs.

The property has structural, fire and smoke damage. The cost to repair the fire damage is estimated at close to $80,000 with a basic scope of works.

We had to put our cat down who suffered respiratory issues due to the smoke inhalation in May and in August my mum passed away suddenly so I am getting extremely despondent over this whole situation and the lack of any progress. - My mum was my confidant and I was able to chat with her over the EQC and fire issues which made it easier, since my mum has gone i've found it extremely hard to cope with not being able to have her support.

Even a year later the property still has very high readings of toxic contaminants and it is not safe to be inside.

I am at a stage where I do not trust them anymore and do not have any faith that this will be sorted anytime soon - its already been 13 months. We are facing a second Christmas living on our lawn because we cannot commit to living elsewhere with no timeframe in sight and have a dog and although I am embarrassed to ask for the publics help I have no other option. This all could have been avoided if they had just sent a letter, email or called me.

What scares me the most is that I still see their product being sold on the internet from sellers who clearly don't know the danger they could be passing onto another home, when will this company seem to care? - When someone dies because of their product? - It could have been us. The last 13 months seem like a never ending nightmare.

Yes our home was earthquake damaged prior to this fire, but it was still liveable, and with the ongoing EQC issues with an advocacy company we are in limbo and cannot repair or rebuild our home but it would mean the world to my children to at least get some sort of normalcy back by being able to be back in our home as soon as possible. I would be forever grateful for any help received or sharing of this page.
