Help me volunteer in Sri Lanka! I will be teaching english to children and monks, as well as working on a Turtle conservation project!

Auckland

I was fortunate enough to grow up in New Zealand, a place where almost anything is available to you if you seek it. Now that I have finished my schooling I have the opportunity to give back some of the skills I've been taught, and the place I have chosen to do this is in Sri Lanka!

I will be volunteering for six weeks in Sri Lanka later this year. Three weeks of this volunteer I will spend teaching children aged 3-15 yrs english (as well as other subjects like computer science and math). I will be placed in a village where I'll live with a local host family. During the day I'll teach in temples, pre-schools and schools to classes of 5-15 students. While there I will also have the opportunity to teach Buddhist monks at a Monastery near the city of Kandy. This is an awesome opportunity as unlike in New Zealand many in Sri Lanka can't afford English lessons and therefore are unable to learn the popular language. This means employment opportunities are decreased. My hope is that while working with the volunteer program i'll be able to inspire children to learn essential subjects such as Math and Science as well as giving them access to English.

For my other three weeks of my Volunteer I'll be working on a Turtle Conservation project based in the coastal town of Ambalangoda. Here I'll help the team already in Sri Lanka protect critically endangered Sea Turtles. Work will include protecting turtle nests, hatching eggs, caring for and treating turtles that are victims of commercial fishing, cleaning the beach releasing turtles back to sea and educating visitors and locals about the turtles. Many local fishermen lack the resources to be able to replace nets, so when a turtle gets caught in their net instead of damaging their net they cut the Turtles fin off, causing severe harm to the animal. While working on this project I hope to help educate locals and visitors about the care needed when dealing with green and Hawksbill Turtles, as well as helping raise future Turtle nest numbers.

Having the chance to give back to a country like Sri Lanka through helping its people and animals is an awesome opportunity, but flights and volunteer costs are expensive. I would be so grateful of any help you can offer so I can then help those in Sri Lanka!

The costs I'm looking to cover are:

~ flights from Auckland to Sri Lanka- $950 NZD

~volunteer programe fee (accommodation and food while in Sri Lanka) - $1582 NZD

~ registration fee $415 NZD

Some help to cover any of these costs would be amazing and very much appreciated! :)

Thank you , thank you, thank you lovely people !
