Waikato

Hi. My name is Jane & I am a happily married 49yr old with two teenage sons. I have cancer. I had been sent to Waikato hospital by ambulance & within days the cancer had completely blocked off my large intestine which then ruptured my bowel into my abdomen. After a 7 1/2 hour surgery all visible cancer removed, I woke to find that i have a colostomy bag that I will have for the rest of my life, a life I intend to live and enjoy each and every moment.

I am usually very active which meant my heart handled the traumatic invasive surgery. Now with chemotherapy looming, I have been told my immune will be very poor during my chemo starting roughly in 4 weeks time. I need help to raise money for mold resistant underfloor insulation, an essential wet-room as it is the only place I can remove and replace my bag hygienically and safely for those around me, a clean healthy kitchen free of mold and rot.

Friends & family have rallied to install it & remove carpet so I can move back home. We got ripped off with a kit-set bathroom, the toilet is rough instead of smooth in the u-bend, shower is falling to pieces, the extraction unit works apart from the light & plumbing requires sorting. I really need a wet-room so I can change my colostomy bag & when I am too ill from chemotherapy that my husband has room to do it for me. A wet-room is easier to keep clean which will lower the risk of infection for me. Our kitchen is needing materials to replace rotten bench-top/floorboards/piles.

BACKSTORY: For the last 3 years my health has deteriorated I have constantly visited my doctor to write referrals to various departments about my sore stomach, hernia, & varicose veins, which he has repeatably done.

Last year my last functioning eye (I only have one eye that I can see out of,) had started to leak blood into the retina causing me to lose the center of my vision. I cried lots about not watching my sons grow up, about being unable to do my weed-eating & lawn-mowing jobs, I couldn't read or drive, my poor vision had caused the loss of most of the activities that I took for granted. Avastin injections saved my vision I was so grateful to see my beautiful family & regain my independence.

Middle of this year my stomach problems got worse. The pain was getting more severe. Visits to the doctor became more frequent. My weight was getting harder to maintain I was eating plenty. The pain in my stomach was helped by using a brace. Food intolerance's were discussed & coeliac disease markers found so I dropped gluten, dairy, caffeine, then seeds and vegetables attacked me. I was running out of food.

I ended up at hospital due to pain & was prescribed codeine so I could move away from the toilet. The pain, bloating, diarrhea & weight-loss continued. Another visit to A&E. This time I was kept in & sent up by ambulance the next day. Nil by mouth for 36 hrs meant faster weight-loss. Sent home & told my colonoscopy appointment would be sent out in a couple of weeks. I rung the Endoscopy dept in a couple of weeks & was told they couldn't see my appointment anywhere.

Well I broke down & cried. Sore, tired, sad I just couldn't hold back. I told her my story. She got an appointment lined up which my friend drove me to. Camera couldn't go past 40cm for the colonoscopy because of an obstruction. I was in pain and asked to be admitted yet I was sent home again (a bumpy 2 and a bit hour drive) & about 11:30pm went back to our local A&E. They sent me up by ambulance to Waikato the next day & that night I was given a CT scan. I was told it would feel like I was peeing myself when the dye was put into my vein - I felt nothing not even heat. The scan looked to me like a watery cavity. I got moved to general surgery\short stay ward M4. I felt worried and didn't know what was happening.

next morning pain was awful Bloating, vomiting. A tube was put down my throat that could empty my stomach of bile. I was told that I had cancer and a year to live. My sister drove from Auckland to see me, she then encouraged the staff to look at other options rather then sending me home with a gastric drain, how lucky for me. Sis then drove to get my hubby & sons another 5 hrs there & back so they could see me before my operation that next morning. Nobody knew if I would make it.

I did! Could you help me through the next stage?

Use of funds

$22,150 will be used for underfloor insulation, a 2m by 4m wetroom, a kitchen fix-up requiring wood & a couple of piles, a bit of plumbing and electrical. Any surplus will be used to get the chimney reboxed for safe fires during winter.

Treatment plan, operation notes, & home progress.  23 January 2019

Heading to Waikato hospital for CT scan this Friday for my chest & abdomen. Next week chemotherapy starts. Three different chemicals plus two anti-nausea meds. I get a box plugged in to my picc line for half a day at Waikato hospital & then I do the next four days at home. Our local hospital will unplug me & then it is rinse & repeat every two weeks for 12 treatments.

Our home has had all carpet, which was full of black mould, removed along with lino & underlay & has been sprayed to remove spores. The lounge is going to be my new bedroom. A 5.2 m2 skip bin was taken away yesterday.

Gaining weight well. As of this morning my scales said 53 kgs, I will beat my target of 55kgs before chemo starts. Operation notes were mindblowing. My surgeons cut so much cancer & dead tissue out. They saved my small intestine by teasing it away from the diseased flesh.

Four large cancers were removed, a 230 x 45mm mass, an 80 x 65 x 15mm mass which included my last ovary, a 65 x 45mm one & a 70mm length of diseased fat plus dead tissue & fluids. Feeling very amazed to be alive.

Thanks for following my journey. Will put photos up once the laptop is found in the chaos so you can see how progress has been made by us.💖

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause. It's not much but I hope it helps. You should get rid of the fire and install a heat pump, fires fill your house with nitrogen dioxide, which causes colorectal cancer.
