To give a little girl her dream of having her own 2 feet on the ground.
Auckland
Lydia was born with PFFD to her right leg, an undeveloped hip, small femoral head and a shorten right femur.
Lydia has been through two successful lengthening surgeries gaining 15cm of length to her femur, she also had a sling hip procedure done, her first lengthening was in 2020 and the second in 2023, we arrived back home March 2024. Lydia has been working very hard at therapy since we have been home but unfortunately, she has come up against a complication and now has posterior knee subluxation.
This has resulted in Lydia's leg tightening and she is unable to fully straighten or bend at the knee. She is now toe walking and walking with a bent knee all the time which causes her pain. Her hip is also causing her some pain as she is compensating the way she walks.
We have been advised Lydia needs a knee reconstruction surgery and possibly we will look at her hip also. This is a 2-part surgery where an external fixator is put on in NZ and over 8 weeks, we will straighten out her leg before flying to the US for the knee reconstruction we will stay there for 7 weeks to have physical therapy follow up after surgery.
As you can appreciate, we need all the help available to make this surgery possible we've only been home 5 months from the last trip, thinking we had at least 4 years to raise funds for her next lengthening. We thank you in advance for helping Lydia with her journey to get 2 feet on the ground.
Please note that we are fundraising for a separate scooter here: https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/lydia-needs-help-to-get-a-mobility-scooter
