Together we build: a home for hope!

A fundraiser to give hope to Mamitiana Orphanage in Madagascar

Wellington

Last year on a cultural tour to Madagascar with 12 New Zealanders and 2 Australians, we visited Mamitiana Orphanage which is home to 54 children aged 9 months to 18 years old. Some of the children are orphans, some are there because their families can't look after them, and others are sets of twins that have been abandoned by their parents due to a practice on the Southeast Coast of Madagascar that considers twins as a curse.

Hary who runs the orphanage is a widow with four children of her own with a big heart and generous spirit who can't just look at others' suffering. She started giving homes to children in 2012. We were inspired by the resilience of Hary and her dedication and obvious abundant love for the children.

They are building a second house to be used as a bedroom, a library and a Youth Centre where the children can learn some craft. The money has run out and they need 9500NZD. We have already raised 4250 NZD of that through a concert so all that's left to raise is 5250 NZD.

So if you would like to be part of a global community, give hope, and make a difference in the lives of these children then please donate what you can. Every dollar counts and money goes a long way.

Nearly finished!  24 March 2026

The work on the new building is progressing well at Mamitiana orphanage. They are finishing the plastering inside and will get on to painting the outside soon. Because of the cyclone season in Madagascar which will finish at the end of this month, all outside work had to be delayed.

Hary sent a few photos of the progress of the building along with her heartfelt thanks, She says : " The children are getting very excited as with the new building, we will have extra bedrooms as well as a workshop area for the youth centre. This means that instead of having 6-7 children to a bed, they will have a bit more space".

Again, thank you so much for your kindness.

Am-pitiavana be (With a lot of love)

Lala, Stuart, Hary and all 54 children from the orphanage.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
