Fundraising for the Tommy Solomon Statue

$4,000 of $202,000 goal
Given by 22 generous donors in around 5 months

Support the recasting of Tommy Solomon’s statue in bronze – a taonga for Moriori, teaching history, culture, and resilience.

Nationwide

For Moriori hūnau (whānau), the statue of Tame Horomona Rehe – Tommy Solomon is not simply a monument. It is a living reminder of endurance, of identity held fast, and of kōrero that survived despite silence. When unveiled in 1986, it marked a turning point, a moment when Moriori were seen, named, and acknowledged in truth.

Nearly four decades later, the original concrete statue has been worn by wind, salt, and time, and can no longer be protected. For hūnau, this loss is felt deeply, as the statue carries its own mana and story.

Recasting the statue in bronze is a Tchipanga — an act of guardianship. It honours Tommy Solomon not only for who he was, but for how he lived, with kindness, generosity, and deep connection to his community. It is part of the wider Moriori journey of revitalisation, strengthening rē (language), culture, and belonging for future generations.

The total project cost is $202,000. All funds raised through this Givealittle page will go directly toward project costs, including the bronze statue, upgrades to the new site, and the costs of an inclusive island-wide unveiling held in the spirit of the original event. Hosting such a gathering on Rēkohu brings real logistical and financial challenges in a remote place — a challenge the komiti embraces wholeheartedly.

If able, your support ensures this miheke (taonga/treasure) continues to stand with dignity and truth, carrying Moriori stories forward with care, respect, and aroha for generations to come.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
