Tree Planting In Rubuguri, Western Uganda - stage 4!

  • Climate disruption and reforestation

As I write this update the economic damage and human impact from climate disruption accelerates across the globe. We've planted over 35,000 trees now but this of course is trivial compared to the damage that our Western lifestyles cause. I hope you might agree with me that we have a moral responsibility to do more; that includes cutting our own GHG footprint AND getting political. "We’ll never get to zero emissions unless we admit the ugly truth – we’re all climate hypocrites."

No surrender. If everyone who said "there's nothing any one person can do" actually did something, just imagine what we could achieve together!

  • Final count = 11,064 trees!

      18 October 2022

    Dear donors

Moses has finalised details with the people of Rubuguri. Thanks to your generous donations we'll be planting over 11,000 trees this time round.

That means our overall total will be 34,400 trees since we started stage 1 of this project.

Once those trees are in the ground and I get receipts for payments to nurserymen, supervisors and other workers, I'll post a final update.

  • 2nd Advance for tree nurery operators

      17 September 2022

Dear donors, thanks to your generosity, stage four will plant many more trees than I envisaged. So I've arranged for our three nursery operators to get a 2nd advance of Uganda shillings 200, 000 each (about NZ$85). They've just signed for this money. The photo shows (L to R) Mr Felix (forester), the three nursery operators, two town council reps (blue jackets) and Mr John who will be responsible for final sign-off to ensure plantings are done. Apart from the councillors, I met all these people during our 2018 visit.

  • To our three nurserymen: more trees please!

    Hi everyone

Just an update: thanks to you for the wonderful donations! Moses has let the nurserymen know that we are requiring many more trees than the initial conservative estimate, so they are now working flat out on propagation.

A slight reality check though - it appears that with the huge increase in plantings, a third Rubuguri planning meeting will be required - I'd hoped to get away with just two. Each meeting incurs some cost - mainly travel and a small daily allowance for Moses (after all, he is doing this on top of his day job). Whatever the extra cost, I'll donate a bit more to cover most of that - so YOUR money goes to trees!

(Pic is of an earlier village meeting, stage 2. )

  • New Budget

      21 August 2022

Thanks to all our generous donors! We now have NZ 4,803 in the kitty so Moses and I are working on a totally revised budget. I originally expected to plant perhaps 4 - 5000 trees; looks like we can now plant 20,000 or more provided we can keep travel and other fixed costs down.

1st money transfer: mainly for advance payment to our three nurserymen, but also to cover Moses' expenses.

(Note: I pay for expenses; your donations plant trees!)

  • Contracts signed, nurserymen advances paid: UGX 250,000 each

Our three nurserymen can now start raising seedlings!

I have personally guaranteed to supply funds for a minimum of 4000 trees - if we get enough donations we can raise that number. Trees in Uganda grow fast - they'll be sequestering carbon within the next year.

  • Contract signing meeting this Friday!

      4 August 2022

Moses will meet Rubuguri councillors and the three nurserymen on Friday to sign contracts and pay advances for them to start growing/propagating seedlings. I'll post details after the meeting.
