Sponsor us to complete 2 Triathlons to raise money for a therapeutic home for street boys in Nakuru, Kenya
Bay of Plenty
Rafiki Familia works with boys living in horrendous conditions on the streets in Nakuru, Kenya. They offer them support and when they are ready they are able to move into a therapeutic house where they are supported to get clean from any drugs they have been using, get much needed therapy, help to access education and make reconnections with family members, if it is safe. There are many reasons these boys end up on the streets including poverty and loss of contact with family due to the 2007 civil war. The life they are forced to lead on the streets is beyond the imagination of most of us and they are subject to ongoing abuse as they try to survive. Rafiki Familia provides these boys with an opportunity to get off the streets, get clean and work towards achieving a productive life. A huge part of their programme is football as the these boys are obsessed with it and therefore this is a great way to engage them and provide opportunities for healthy recreation and teaching. Due to the demand for housing and because of the danger that many of these boys face on a daily basis a second home has been set up called Rafiki Yetu. If you would like to learn more about Rafiki Familia, Rafiki Yetu and their parent organisation Play Kenya please follow the links on this page to their websites. There is also a therapeutic home for girls called Rafiki Mwema which takes in girls who have been sexually abused. All these organisations do amazing work with very damaged children.
Stacey and I are very fortunate to be able to live in a safe, democratic and beautiful country which is able to support those in the community who are less fortunate. We have been blessed with homes, work, healthy happy children and supportive families. Due to this we have decided that we would like to use our own personal health and fitness goals as a way to raise awareness of those who are not so fortunate. We chose Rafiki Familia because I personally know the founder Anne-Marie and therefore we can guarantee that any money that you donate will go straight to helping these boys.
If you would like to support us we would be very grateful - even if it is only $5 as everything helps. We are training hard for the first triathlon which is the TriChicks Triathlon on Feb 21st. Stacey has done both events before, but the second one she did as part of a team - I have never done one. We are just normal people - not athletes and so any kind of event like this is a big deal!!! We are loving the challenge! If you would like to know more about Rafiki Familia please go to thier web page at www.http://rafikifamilia.com/ or the page of thier parent organisation Play Kenya at www.playkenya.com. Thank you for reading our page and if you have donated money - thank you for supporting us!!! See you on the other side!
Anne-Marie Tipper who founded this charity is a personal friend of mine. She is an amazing woman who has dedicated her life to helping traumatised children in Kenya. She is an expert on child trauma and attachment and through her charity Play Kenya has been able to set up therapeutic homes for girls who have been sexually abuse (Rafiki Mwema) and boys who have been forced to live on the streets (Rafiki Familia and Rafiki Yetu). Not only does this charity work directly with these children but it advocates in the wider community and with government agencies to try to improve the way children are treated in Kenya. Anne-Marie is truly an inspiration for her committment to the children and I can personally guarantee that all money donated will go straight to Rafiki Familia and helping these boys.
