Graham (aka Twink) was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in August 2014. He needs help to keep active and stay on his feet while he can.
Canterbury
Last year Graham was diagnosed with MND, a cruel disease that affects the nerve endings, gradually wasting away muscle tone, and eventually the ability to walk, breathe and swallow. The average life expectancy for someone newly diagnosed with MND is 2 - 5 years. Graham was a volunteer firefighter for 35 years in New Brighton and more recently in Omokoroa. He has been extremely active in the past as a firefighter and also competing in multisport events, finishing the two day Coast to Coast in 2003. While he can still walk at the moment, he cannot go far before he becomes extremely fatigued. His mobility and balance are poor and slowly worsening. An electric wheelchair is on its way, however, he would still like to be able to get on a bike and take his dog, Stella, for walks through Bottlelake forest. We have found a good option that will enable him to get out in the great outdoors. It is a SmartMotion electric bike. People often say "let me know if I can help" and this is it. Let's keep Twink on his feet and active while he's able.
I am Graham's wife and mother of our two girls Jessica and Natalie. The diagnosis of MND has been a huge blow to our family. We want Graham to be able to stay on his feet and be independent for as long as he can. Getting out into nature and walking the dog is something he really enjoys.
