It took a while to find someone in Rubuguri with a smartphone, but now we have some images of the plantings

    Hi Donors

With the rains well underway, the trees have now been planted - 3180 in total.

I'm about to forward the final instalment of funds to the smallholders, nurserymen and supervisors.

    Thanks!

  • Planting timetable

      17 July 2017

Dear Donors, Just a quick update on this project: The long rains (normally March-June) were a bit of a failure in Western Uganda; and in anycase we would not have been ready in time.

The next rainy season starts around September. By then our tree seedlings should be ready to plant out! I'll let you know when planting is underway.

Once we have sign-off that the trees have all been planted and initial weeding completed, we'll pay the remaining 50% to the farmers.

Thanks again for all your help.

  • It's all on!

      1 June 2017

Dear supporters, we have finalized the contracts.

I have forwarded funds to Uganda to pay the agreed 50% advance to 3 nurserymen and 106 smallholders so that site preparation and planting can get started. We have an experienced local forester on board, contracted to deliver advice to smallholders on planting and maintenance; plus the chairman of the local council who will supervise to ensure planting and maintenance actually happens.

The balance of the funds will be paid out once we get his final sign-off, which I expect will be in about 8 months or so from now.

Thanks once again for your support!

  • A big thank you!!

      20 April 2017

A shout out to all of you who have recently contributed so generously to this reforestation scheme. I have asked Moses Akantorana, my representative in Uganda, to order 50% more trees as a result. That's fantastic. Travelling to this remote area to discuss our MoU with the local people involves a 3 hour trip on bad roads. At least two moe trips will be needed to finalise everything. We are also paying the local council chairman to supervise plantings to ensure compliance, plus a forester who will advise community groups on tree planting and care. Your help means I am now more comfortable about these unavoidable admin costs.
