  • Umu's Update

      20 February 2025

    Kia ora Wonderful Supporters !

Umu had his 4th & 5th round of chemo on the 28th & 29th of January. After that he spiked a fever on the 4th of February, which after an ED visit then resulted in a staph infection around his port line. Talk about challenge on top of challenge !! Gosh his whole whānau are an incredible unit I tell ya !! He was treated accordingly for this infection, this resulted in Umu having to be monitored in hospital for a few days. Due to the sensitivity in the area they delayed his scheduled 6th round of chemo by a day, which he then had on the 18th of February. Round 7 of chemo is scheduled for the 26th of February. Also, Monday the 24th of February Umu goes in for his MRI & CT scan to see what the tumor is looking like. The halfway mark is something to feel great achievement in 🙏🏽❤️

Please keep holding Umu in your thoughts & karakia. Monique (Umu's Māmā) posts regular updates, jump on her FB account to be informed. Sending any sunshine their way DOES help and IS lifting. It doesn't have to be monetary every time - sending a message, or a lifting waiata their way is a beautiful thing too. Even singing along to a waiata in your day & thinking of them & this journey is a positive thing, serving in Umu's healing ❤️‍🩹 .

The Davidson-Kaiwai Whānau appreciate you all so much for your aroha.

    Ngā mihi x

    Kia ora Supporters,

Umu is almost a week into his second round of chemo now. The MRI results showed the tumor had got a little bit bigger, they didn't know whether it's dead cells and fluid from the chemo, because there's some swelling. So to be safe and cover all bases they wanted to start his next round of chemo. On top of that, young Umu has been juggling mouth ulcers & some weight loss. Arapeta & Mon (Māma & Pāpā) are by his side all the way, taking turns doing night shifts sleeping over with him. They got to have 4 days all together before the second round of chemo started, which was treasured time 🙏🏽. I don't think many of us could even comprehend what this is like for a parent, let alone navigating this as a 13 year old. So let's keep sending karakia, aroha & strength to this whānau ❤️. Umu can receive mail at the Ronald Mc Donald House. Sending something tactile could make his day, mail is exciting !😁 They make sure to get it the patients.

Any courier mail can be addressed:

  • Umu's update #2

      8 January 2025

    Kia ora Supporters,

A few unforseen issues came up for Umu: Fever started 06 Jan 5am, he was rushed to ED. His fever is up then down, then up. Umu is still in hospital, Doctors don't know what's causing the fever. They've taken bloods the past 2 days to do cultures, so far nothing has grown. He is on antibiotics. Unfortunately the pain has come back in his left side.

Please keep sending him all that love and healing energy 🙏🏼. Thanks for being here, your support really does make a difference 💜

The Davidson-Kaiwai Whānau is SO grateful for your support. Each one of you have made a difference - Ngā mihi nui 🙏🏽.

The medical team were able to change the schedule and Umu got to have Christmas with his whānau, before starting his treatment this week. Which was great news amongst this testing time. Umu had the chemo port implanted on the morning of Friday the 27th of December, followed by his first treatment that afternoon. Then his second chemo round on Saturday the 28th of December. Now it is a rest period for 2 weeks before he has further treatment. Let's be a community of support through this journey for Umu people! If you can share this page, please do so on social platforms, email & word of mouth. Pray for him, send healing thoughts,, however works for you & whatever your beliefs may be. Every bit of energy really does help ❤️ Arohanui x
