After a serious accident last year left me unable to gain the full use back of my right hand-I am unable to participate fully in fundraising
Otago
On the 22/6/14 I was at a Scout (Venturers) fundraising event, cutting down trees and splitting them into sizeable pieces to put into a house sized fire. Another girl and I were using a log splitter to cut the rings into firewood size pieces but I have a very serious accident with the log splitter and just about cut all my fingers off, two out of the four fingers that i severely cut were just held on by skin I completely cut though all the bones in my four fingers and smashed a knuckle, I was lucky to have only cut though 1 nerve but I crushed all the others and cut through tendons so everything had to be reattached. When I got an ambulance to hospital on the Sunday, because of the long time that it took for me to get to hospital 2 of my fingers were lucky to be alive because of lack of blood flow going to them. I had 8 hours surgery and was in hospital for just about 2 weeks, the surgeons put titanium rods into my fingers to support the bones to grow back together. I was told that the recovery period would be about one year, it has already been 8 months and the doctors don't expect there to be very much improvement from where I am today, they plan for me to have more surgery when all of the bones have healed to try and get more movement in my fingers as the movement I have in all of my fingers is very restricted- but they are unable to tell me if the surgery will successfully improve movement in my fingers. As a consequence of this I am unable to actively participate in fundraising activities like this one, so that I can get money to go away on the Inferno New Zealand Venture Rotorua 2016 (Scout Camp). The money that I raise will be spent on the Flights that I will need to get to and from Rotorua, the activity fee and the Venture fee itself. A Venture camp is where Venturers (14-18 year olds) from all over New Zealand camp in Rotorua for 12 days, joined by teenagers from Australia, Asia-Pacific and further afield, all sharing a unique mix of exploration, culture and friendship. A Venture Camp is held only every three years and this Venture expects to bring together 1,000 teens. Rotorua, the heart of the volcanic North Island, is the venue for this melting-pot of activities and adventure. You can find out more at http://inferno2016.com
As being a part of the Scouting movement I am able to volunteer which creates joy by giving and receiving. The challenges and new experiences Scouting offers to me broadens my horizons. I love meeting new people and being able to support other people and pass on my knowledge, while also gaining new knowledge. Scouting provides diversity which means that I get to interact and gain more cultural awareness. I am an active participant of Ventures in New Zealand and one day I would like to become a leader to pass on all of the great things I have learnt through being a scout and giving back all that I have experienced.
