Fundraising for Vida Association in San Miguel Duenas, Guatemala.
Wellington
Vida Association is an after-school care programme in San Miguel Duenas Guatemala. They provide schooling, meals, hygiene education and work with children with special needs including Down Syndrome and Autism. Working with kids from the local area, they also provide physical therapy as well as other community outreaches such as break-dancing and football events.
The money being fundraised is to be used for the meals provided to children, as well as towards community events and towards the teachers who often work for little or no pay.
For as little as $1 NZ, children are able to receive a full meal and small supper which is often the only food they receive each day
$100 NZ a month pays for a teacher who often teaches up to 20-25 children that would otherwise not be receiving any education. Most of the children do not go to school because the families cannot afford it, or because the kids have specialised needs that the schooling system cannot cope with.
After volunteering for five weeks at Association Vida in Guatemala, I know that every dollar raised will benefit the children and the community of San Miguel Duenas immensly.
The programme is run by a few local guys who grew up in the area and decided to make a difference with the little that they had. After being there for just a week I already felt like I was at home and I left to return to New Zealand knowing I had three brothers on the other side of the world
