My Story

My name is Violah Mhungu. I was born on 11 April 1972. I married at 32.

trying to complete our house that is half finished, located in Goromonzi, Zimbabwe. With economic challenges here in Harare, rent has skyrocketed. I decided to move to peri-urban so that my kids can access better education. Rentals in Goromonzi were affordable and I could walk to my section and garden. I managed to build a house to wall plate level but have failed to put a roof for almost two years. My income is down by 75%.

In July I was given notice to vacate the house I was renting. So I decided to put up a temporary roof and moved into our incomplete house on Aug 18.

Due to financial problems I am not able to complete the house. Currently my family is staying in the house without doors and windows. We have improvised closure of entry points to avert cold and animals at night. Thieves are rampant in the area and Mosquitos expose us to malaria.

Our vege garden is drying up as is the well. We need a bore hole to grow veges. Floriculture is also a possible source of funds.

Our children are aged 17, 16 and 9. I am also guardian to a niece aged 13, and my 98-year-old mother, My father and in-laws have passed, so I am forced to look after the family and my mother single handed

My humble request to well-wishers is funding to complete the house and if possible drill a borehole to continue with our garden so that we sell vegetables at the nearby Ruwa Market for a living.

Murray Benbow's involvement (page creator)

Violah was my counterpart at the UMP Rural District Council when I was on a VSA assignment there 1998-2000 as a Small Business Advisor. I was impressed with her intelligence and work ethic and her hopes for a future family and better life for Zimbabweans.

Final roundup  21 May 2023

Thankyou everyone for the donations. Altho the page has not raised as much as we hoped, we understand that Kiwis have been under huge pressure to donate to local causes, mostly related to adverse weather events. Rest assured Violah and her family appreciate every dollar they received. I will be organizing the bank transfer to Zimbabwe hopefully this week.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
