New Surf Lifesaving Tower BUILDING HAS STARTED. Help to build a new tower at Waimarama Beach and keep our community safe
Hawke's Bay
In late 2014 it was decided to replace the existing Surf Life Saving tower at Waimarama beach following a request from the Hastings District Council. The primary reason being that the tower was located too close to the sea and the concrete armouring installed some years ago to protect the foundations was contributing to erosion on the beach. The original tower has since been demolished.
A subcommittee of the Waimarama Surf Club was been established to propose a design, seek funding and construct a new tower.
We currently have $220,000 pledged towards the $350,000 project. $130,000 to go...
James Laver is the Property Director at Waimarama Surf Lifesaving Club.
We are fundraising for our new Rescue Tower to be in place for the start of next summer to keep our beach safe.
For the last 65 years – the Waimarama Surf Life Saving Club has patrolled Waimarama Beach every summer.
Over those years, many lives have been saved and we still continue to save lives and prevent injury, every year and every weekend from early November to late March. Our volunteer lifeguards train and upskill in their own time and are then tested yearly to make sure they are performing to be ready at a moment’s notice to save someone’s life.
If you, your family, friends or colleagues use Waimarama beach as your summer playground, we will be here for you and the ones you love, keeping you safe.
However – patrolling our beach is expensive. Last year it cost our club $138,000 to cover the costs of the operational running of our club. Of that amount - $48,000 was specific costs of equipment we must have in order to provide this vital service.
