Owaka's Waka sculpture and landscaping the township's green areas and entrance ways.
Otago
Owaka's 150th celebrations are happening from the 7th January – 10th January 2016.
We are working on landscaping and planting the reserve areas and entrances to the township.
The Waka, through public consultation was decided is to be the identity of the township. Owaka is the only town in New Zealand with Waka in its name, we want a point of difference and for visitors to visit the museum, stay in the accommodation, spend in the gift shops and cafes/ restaurants, have an understanding of our history and the pride we take in our town. We want, not only to create opportunity’s and growth, but also respect and highlight our history and environment.
The Waka has been designed by Russell Beck and will be: Height - 8 feet above ground level at the stern and 10 or 11 feet at the bow.
Length- 10 m,
Width - of the hull without the outrigger 900 mm,
Width - of the hull with the outrigger 2 m,
Depth - of the hull 500 mm,
Width - at the top of the sail 3 m,
Overall - height from the ground to the top of the masts 6 m,
We have raised $63,000 to date but need $20,000 to finish the waka and $10,000 for landscaping the township's green spaces and entrances.
Owaka Going Forward is the steering body for the waka sculpture and landscaping project.
