We are raising funds to build a lifesaving 1 million litre underground water reservoir in Maralal, Northern Kenya.
Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui
Maralal, a small town in Northern Kenya, is a semi-arid desert town with an average rainfall of 312mm per year. The town is mostly a Samburu Maasai pastoralist community, relying on livestock and household farming for income. The town experiences flash floods and drought conditions, which last for approximately 10 months of the year. This constant drought leads to almost never enough water in Yare, a constant challenge that needs a solution.
Women in Maralal have to walk for over 2 hours daily to collect water, which is considered their work. This often results in miscarriages and missed schooling for younger girls, who are further disadvantaged as they may find low-paying jobs and lack education. Additionally, they do not learn to speak beyond their native language or develop creative thinking skills.
A simple solution to alleviate these struggles and hardships is to construct or build an underwater water reservoir. This would allow the community to collect rain, store it, and use it throughout the dry season. This would help the community become more resilient and contribute to the world.
