We need some help now that our Dad is terminally ill

Thank you everyone for all your kindness.

Thanks to your donations, Maisy and Oliver were able to follow David's wishes regarding his cremation. The Givealittle account will be transferred into Oliver's name, so that any gifts you wish to give in the next months will go towards David's children.

Some of David's favourite songs were played, as a tribute to him, on the Library's radio show on OAR. https://oar.org.nz/shows/the-library-mix/

  • Update on David

      26 November 2024

Sadly David has passed away at Otago Community Hospice. We'll treasure our memories of him, each in our own way. Only a few weeks ago his colleagues held a special lunch for him and we all dressed up in tartan to honour his Scottish homeland. David has had a positive and profound influence on all of us who were lucky to have known him. He was particularly proud of and devoted to his children, who will be missing him dreadfully.

In one of his last texts to me he said "I'm just very grateful for everything. The kindness, generosity and humour".

  • An update from David:

      16 September 2024

It has been wonderful having my eldest son, Steven visit from Scotland and this is due, in large part, to the generosity of so many people. We are both very grateful for the time we were able to spend together. Having all my kids together has been an unexpected gift. I want to thank everyone for their generous donations and kind thoughts.

    Love from the Hill Family

  • Family update

      23 August 2024

I had a long chat with David yesterday and his sense of calm always impresses me, even in the face of huge family upheaval.

He's "getting his affairs in order", as the old saying goes, with the help of many friends, thanks especially to the legal help from a former colleague.

He's very thankful for all the donations (over $16,000 so far!) and offers of support, and as you can imagine has a lot on his mind but is dealing with one thing at a time and even managed to come in to work for a few hours this week.

Even in these uncharted waters he still cares about those around him and has an uncanny ability to make people laugh.

I believe his wide reading in poetry, literature, philosophy, psychology, history and art have helped him become grounded.

It must be hard for him not knowing how quickly or slowly things will progress, but he's putting support in place for Maisy and Oliver.
