Weed Action require a new community resource in the form of a trailer to transport the tools of the trade to and from our working bees.
Northland
Weed Action Whangarei Heads have been helping residents control serious environmental pest plants at the Heads since 2014, by any means possible. From the steep slopes of Mt Manaia to the smallest urban backyard we operate on a landscape approach and encourage neighbours to work together on shared weedy problems. Over that period we have gradually built our reputation to what it is today and we are proud of what our community has achieved to protect our native ecosystems. Step by step, grant by grant and thousands of voluntary hours later we find ourselves coordinating more and more 'weed events' or working bees to protect our public reserves, roadsides, dune systems, forests and all other native habitats.
During our coordinated volunteer events we bring a variety of necessities such as trigger sprayers, knapsack sprayers, protective gear, power tools, hand tools, water, our banner, morning tea and sometimes transport green waste for disposal (all the tools of the trade plus more). All of this gear usually takes up the entire boot and back seat of a car which our coordinators use for personal use also and although do-able, a trailer set up would be much more practical. So, last year dedicated Trustees Jenny Lawrence and Robyn Bigelow successfully spent time applying for grants to make this a reality. Weed Action were grateful to be awarded $3,000 from The Lotteries Commission and $3,360 from The Whangarei District Council Community Fund. These funds bring us close to the $8,053 needed to have our own custom-built 'luggage trailer' but there is a deficit of $1,693 to complete the purchase, plus we also require approx. $1,500 to have it wrapped with our branding.
Once set-up correctly and fitted out on the inside, the trailer will also be available to the community for loan and everything needed to carry out a productive neighbourhood working bee is easily attached to a car.
We hope donors will support us in our mission and view the trailer as another valuable resource for our community to take action against invasive weeds and protect our unique native habitats at the Heads.

If there is surplus funds raised then it will be spent on the internal fit-out of the trailer or supporting volunteer groups working on local reserves.
We have a Trailer! 29 July 2021
We are super happy to report that we now have a purpose-built trailer :-) This is thanks to our generous community (you), Community Funds from the Whangarei District Council and the Lotteries Commission. We're really happy with the quality thanks to the team at Pinto Trailers and spent some time on Monday oooh-ing, aaaa-hing and visualising all its possible uses. The next step is to fit-out the interior for tools and gear and to have our branding wrapped around the exterior. We're looking forward to having this resource available to the community to encourage some more Weed Action!
Many thanks for the donation Briar :-)
Thanks very much for the support!
