Help support Westen Hirst make a full recovery!
Auckland
We need your help!
As some of you may know my talented and wonderful nephew Westen Hirst a young surfing athlete was involved in a motorcycle accident in Bali (his home country) last week.
Westen has been in ICU for 5 days in a hospital in Bali. He is in a stable condition now and being moved to a general room. Westen, has suffered internal injuries therefore needing many scans, tests and an up and coming surgery. As there is no health cover in Bali and unfortunately Westen’s insurance only covers partial parts of his medical bills, the bills are accumulating as he receives the treatment needed to make a full recovery.
Westen, will be in hospital for sometime and with the mounting financial costs it is putting pressure on his Dad and Mum in an already stressful time. It is hard to estimate the total cost of his treatment as it is ongoing at this stage.
Westen, deserves the best care needed to make a full recovery so he can get back in the ocean and do what he does best! Shredding up those big waves in Indonesia and continuing on with his training and surf contests!
Your support-whether by donating or sharing his story will help Westen and his family get through this tough time. We truely appreciate your love and support.
I am Westen’s aunty Brodie from New Zealand.
The money will help pay for medical treatment and allow his Dad time off work to support Westen in hospital.
Westen’s recovery update 6 November 2024
6 week update, last week we did a lot of final check ups on Westen's abdominal area, which was all very positive. His spleen and kidneys are healing well, both still have hematomas on them but are getting smaller every day. The lesion on his spleen is healing well on its own, almost fully healed leaving slight scar tissue only.
The surgeon at Siloam hospital wanted to operate on his back very early on, we felt this was too soon putting a lot of pressure on his spleen/stomach area, as they had only just recovered from all the drugs/antibiotics.
We sort 2nd and 3rd opinions for the fracture of his L2 transverse fracture both surgeons said not to remove the bone. As, Westen is very young and has no pain in the area meant the bone is not affecting his spinal movements in any form. At this point in time we have decided to take the no surgery pathway.
After an extensive examination session with an Osteopath who put his body through a lot of movements and realigned him, he was given the okay to start an extensive rehab training programme and given the okay to get back in the water. We were stoked to hear this news! Rehab has been going smoothly with Westen putting in the hard yards.
A huge thank you to everyone who sent good vibes and healing messages , who hung out and supported him while recovering in hospital and at home and lastly for the amazing financial support from you all. This has eased the pressure of covering medical bills and ongoing going rehab. ❤️🙏
