WHANGANUI CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY (IJD)

$160 of $10,000 goal
Given by 7 generous donors in 8 weeks

A community project to grow the Whanganui jazz community and connect it to the national and international communities.

Manawatu / Whanganui

Whanganui joins the worldwide jazz community celebrating music as a way to bring people together to create a better world. This year we need to raise money to present the Brotherman Project at the Royal Whanganui Opera House on 30 April 2024. The Project (click on the YouTube link below) brings Samoan rap artist King Kapisi on stage with the Rodger Fox Big Band, highlighting how jazz music can work with other forms of music to create intercultural dialogue.

IJD (see www.jazzday) is a joint initiative between the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz and UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It is currently celebrated in virtually every country around the globe. The Whanganui jazz community has led the way in Aotearoa New Zealand with celebrations every year since 2018 (2020 was cancelled due to Covid). The New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO has supported our event since 2019, as has our local council through Creative New Zealand. We have put our town on the world stage by promoting this noble initiative not only on April 30, the day designated as IJD, but throughout the year, every year. Our plans are to keep growing awareness of the mission to bring justice and peace to the world at a time when it is desperately needed. We want to help Whanganui and Aotearoa New Zealand achieve the promise of a just society.

Use of funds

We need NZD 10,000 to bring the Brotherman Project to the Royal Whanganui Opera House on 30 April 2024. Should we be unable to raise sufficient funds, all money raised will be spent on jazz initiatives in Whanganui promoting the IJD mission.
