Help us raise funds for a CYCLE TRACK around our school grounds. We want to help our children to be ACTIVE, FIT, HEALTHY and HAVE FUN!

Auckland

A CYCLE TRACK will help teach children road safety skills and to be confident when cycling. We want our children to have a safe place to learn and practice bike riding skills. As a TravelWise School we want to encourage environmentally friendly transport, as well as healthy life choices. We believe a Cycle Track will encourage more children to ride, and will also teach valuable road safety skills in a safe environment. Children cycling will have to learn to watch out for pedestrians crossing the track, and children not riding will need to learn to be aware of bikes. We envisage having mini pedestrian crossings across the track to provide a safe place to cross, as well as helping children learn how to use a pedestrian crossing correctly. Auckland Transport and Harbour Sport are going to provide cycle skills training for staff and students once the track is completed. So many good reasons!

We hope to have this track installed this year - we currently have almost 1/2 the funds needed, with donations from school families, fundraising, and a grant from the Harcourt Foundation. We are busy applying for more grants, but would really appreciate any help we can get to ensure this project can go ahead soon. :) THANK YOU!

A TravelWise team of year 6 students worked together in 2013 to design a track in collaboration with an engineer from Fulton Hogan as part of a Futureintech project. They entered it in to the Transpower Neighbourhood Engineering Awards and got a merit for the design. Since then we have been working with Bikes in Schools, Harbour Sport and Auckland Transport to fine tune our design and raise funds.

About us

Whangaparaoa School is located on the Hibiscus Coast approx 45 mins north of central Auckland.

We are fundraising to create a cycle track in the school grounds to help teach our children road safety skills and to give them an extra way to keep fit, healthy and have fun! This track can be used by the community outside of school hours and will be a good safe place for children to practice their cycle skills. We hope to get a pump and skills track too, so that there is extra challenge once children are comfortable with basic riding.
