Hands-on accessible science & nature holiday programme in Christchurch where 10–13-year-olds explore, experiment, and grow into scientists

Christchurch, Canterbury

In every classroom there are bright, curious kids who can’t wait to test, mix, and discover — the ones who light up at the mention of an experiment. Wild Scene Investigators is designed for them: a five-day, hands-on science and nature programme for 10–13-year-olds in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Many young people love science but don’t fit traditional sports or outdoor programs, and their whānau struggle to find safe, stimulating holiday options. This course gives those young scientists a place to belong — in the lab, beside the river, and out in the community.

Each day they tackle real-world questions: testing river water, identifying plants, examining feathers and eggs, and learning about local ecosystems through the Māori value of kaitiakitanga — guardianship of the natural world.

Lead educator Brent Barrett holds an MSc in Conservation Science and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning. He’s a fully registered teacher, former DOC research scientist, dyslexic parent, and environmental educator.

Funding will cover start-up costs: high-quality resources, safe reusable gear, and subsidised places across two pilot programmes — including one tailored for dyslexic learners and a strong commitment to inclusive, mobility-friendly, rainbow-safe spaces.

Your support isn’t a handout; it’s an investment in a home-grown science adventure that will keep running after this campaign.

Please donate or share to help launch Wild Scene Investigators and make curiosity contagious.

All funds raised will go towards:

$750 - Developing detailed day-to-day class resources (printing, graphic design, resource development meetings/consultations, system/software development, curriculum planning)

$1,700 - Reusable lab/field equipment (tracking tunnels, water collecting bottles, nets, ice trays, tweezers, hand lenses (x20), trail camera (x2) for invertebrates, binoculars (x2))

$45 for 2 sessions - Consumable lab/field equipment (batteries, chew & ink cards, universal indicator, food based "chemicals" (acids (vinegar) & bases (baking soda) etc), coloured pencils and paper)

$1,350 - Covering costs to subsidize (10-15% discount) two 5-day pilot programs in 2026 (one for dyslexic only learners)

$355 - Advertising material and materials for participation badges

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
