A wish for wheels to enable a kuia to continue her active involvement in her community.
Dunedin, Otago
Hinerangi has always been fiercely independent and very active and involved in whanau and marae life and the wider roles and responsibilities of tangata whenua But the last few years have been very difficult as Hine has faced and overcome a series of health challenges. She was hospitalized for a serious infection in her knees and was in grave danger several times. She managed to recover from that only to be faced with serious breast cancer that necessitated a big operation but again, even though experiencing several serious setbacks she has recovered again. Twice a week visits toTe Kaika gym have helped her get mobile again but the time has come for an easier solution to her mobility problems and enable her to get out and about again.. She has set her sights on a folding lightweight electric wheelchair the Freedom Chair DEO8. http://www.freedom-chair.nz This chair folds and splits in 2 and can be easily put in a car. It takes 3 batteries and has a range of 15 km. Hine hopes to set up a trust for kaumatua to help with mobility issues and intends this chair to be passed on when she has no further use for it Any donation is greatly appreciated..thank you!
I am Hinerangi's friend and whanau member in the wider sense of the word and have been closely involved in her health journey.
It will buy a lightweight folding electric wheelchair.
