Daniel needs a safe place to shower
Waihi, Waikato
Two and a half years ago, our son Daniel Wright and his wife, came to live with us. Dan had been diagnosed as having Neuro degenerative ataxia. In other words his brain is shrinking. As he had to give up work they couldn't afford the rent in Rotorua and faced living in their car. At that time Dan walked with the aid of a walking stick and as the time has gone on his abilities have decreased dramatically.
He is now using an electric wheelchair and has the use of only one arm. He has no feeling in his face and mouth and chokes easily. He can't cut his own food and will soon need to be fed. He is a fall risk and for him a fall would be like shaken baby syndrome. He is losing the power of speech and his hearing is declining too. We need to turn our bathroom into a safe wet room shower but can't afford the $25,000 it will cost. My husband and I are pensioners. Dan is only 46. If we can't renovate the bathroom he will need to go into care which means a rest home.
Turning the bathroom into a wet floor shower means removing the shower stall and wash hand basin unit and installing a water tight ,non slip flooring that he can access in his wheelchair.
