Young, gay man fears death in Somalia. Let's get him to safety!
Otago
Mohammad (fake name) is a gay Somali man in his early 20s. He is intelligent and loves music and helping others. Mohammad has a lot to give, but Somali law in 2022 is based on the extreme Islamic regime which now rules the country. Being LGBTQIA in Somalia is therefore life threatening. The government encourages people to "report" on others and arrests can be made at any time. The "punishment" for being gay in Somalia is death, either by being thrown from a high building or by being stoned to death. Families sometimes hand members over to the police for "dishonouring" them. Mohammad presents as effeminate and (justifiably) lives in terror. As well as all this, his parents are trying to force him to marry a female.... which he says will be cruel to both himself and to the woman involved. Our charity wishes to sponsor Mohammad to come to NZ. Phase 1: Leaving Somalia for another African country, requires $4000 NZ (passport, flight, other transport and some living expenses). Mohammad is working, but also needs our support. No one should be murdered for their sexuality. Please help us to help Mohammad to have a future free from fear.
