Zaire Ugapo - 2015 NZ U19 American Football

My name is Zaire Ugapo and I am 17 years old. I attend Alfriston College in South Auckland and currently in Year 13 studying to complete my Level 3.

Throughout my life, I have been raised to have a good balance in all that I do. Sports is one aspect of me that I do well in. I have always been a keen sportsman and have played many different sports from Rugby, Basketball, Cricket, Weightlifting, Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, American Football, Rugby League and even mixed Netball.

Although American Football is not a major sport in New Zealand, it is slowly becoming more and more popular. I have been selected to represent New Zealand Under 19’s to travel to Australia this coming July. The game between New Zealand and Australia is a qualifying match, with an opportunity to represent New Zealand in the (International Federation of American Football) IFAF Under-19 World Championship 2016 which will be held in Mexico.

Since I was 8years old, I have watched my dad and uncles play American Football for Tamaki Lightning American Football Club. This was my motivation until I was old enough to play for the Junior team. In my first season with the Juniors I won the Defensive player of the year. This year, I also won the Colts Defensive player of the year award. American Football is a sport that is both physically and mentally challenging. It has taught me many useful skills on and off the field. The importance of persevering when times are hard, being loyal to your team and true to yourself. My long term goal is to gain a football scholarship to study overseas and play the game that I love.

I need your help to take this first step on to the International stage and to make a dream become reality. Total amount raised will go towards airfares and accomodation for the tournament.
