The historic Zion Hill Church and Hall need major restoration work. Help us restore these buildings and make them beautiful.
Birkenhead, Auckland
Zion Hill Church has stood at the corner of Onewa Road and Birkenhead Ave since 1885. The original chapel, now attached to the Hall, built in 1880 was the meeting place for the Birkenhead Borough Council until separate council chambers could be built.
Time has taken its toll and major building work is now needed for historic buildings to continue serving the community.
Stage 1 is now underway. This includes:
i) Restoration of Hall windows and doors, Birkenhead Ave end (built 1901)
ii) Replacement of basement room windows and door. (built 1939)
iii) Restoring toilet block wall and plumbing
iv) Re-enforcing floor of upper room, the original 1880 chapel behind the Hall
This is just the start. All parts of the complex are in need of major building repairs, as well as painting.
All parts built before 1964 including the stained glass windows and the interiors of the Church and Hall have been classified as Heritage Category B by the Auckland City Council.
Help us restore these historic buildings and make them beautiful once more.
Zion Hill Methodist Church has been at the hub of the Birkenhead community for over 135 years. We are home to small English Language, Samoan and Korean congregations as well as a variety of groups from the wider community.
Money raised will be used to repair, restore, renovate and beautify the buildings on the church site.
Stage 1 is now complete 11 April 2023
Just curtains and furnishing to be done. Old coloured glass has been found similar to the broken pane in the Hall stained glass so this can now be reglazed.
