100km for Sammy! Join us in supporting Samuel & other young champions who rely on the amazing Conductive Education Canterbury

  • Thank you! He did it!!

      14 October 2024

Thank you so much for all the donations, we are absolutely blown away and stoked to have met the target we had for Conductive Education Canterbury. Scott ran his race and smashed it! 100km in the bank. He finished the run in 14 hours and 32 minutes. A huge effort and we couldn't be more proud of him and what he has done for our whanau with raising these funds for Conductive Education Canterbury. Thank you again, Rach and fam.

Wow, we are blown away by the donations so far and have hope that we will reach a goal we had of 5k for Conductive Education Canterbury. A little more about Conductive and what they mean to Samuel and his whanau - Sammy attends Conductive Education twice a week and during his days there he completes physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy - but all of this looks like play to him, its amazing how they use specific play activities to support our children with their development. In the picture attached you can see Sammy doing painting with his feet! One aspect of Sam's condition means he has low muscle tone and wears AFO's ( a splint support ) on his feet up to his ankles. As a whanau we are so grateful to conductive for supporting our boy with his needs and showing him what he is capable of. And we appreciate all the support from all of you who have donated to this amazing organisation - not long to race day! Our biggest appreciation has to go to Scott who is running his first 100km ultra marathon with Sammy and Conductive in mind, raising awareness alone is huge so the amazing mahi Conductive is known wider, raising the funds to help them continue doing what they do is profound to all of us who are a part of Conductive Education Canterbury.

  • Scotty's training to date

Training has been pretty full on and going reasonably well, stacking up just over 626 kms since I made the decision to go after that daunting 100. This ends up being an average of 12.3 km per run and for those that know me as an ex mediocre rugby player where cardio was a huge weakness this took some really deliberate training to get here. The reality is It's been building over the course of the year not just the last 14 weeks which has totaled 1200 plus kms. Over the last 14 weeks as you would expect there have been some challenges to work through that I thought I would share. Firstly, the absolute time suck that this type of training takes on your life. Disappearing for up to 7 hour runs at the longest point and fitting this in around my young children and work life has been tough at times. Some 3 am starts to try to mitigate it but really the award so far should go to my rockstar wife for supporting me to get out and hit the trails. Secondly, I had a health scare about the midway point in this training block. Getting some chest pains that put the brakes on for around 4 weeks while I sought professional help to get tests and get back on the road. This felt really reflective of some of the challenges seen at conductive where overcoming obstacles happens a lot more frequently.

Lastly, looking after my body and allowing enough time for sleep and recovery have been crucial.

With roughly 4 weeks to go I'm terrified, anxious and excited by what's ahead.
