Running is hard work, and so is raising a baby when you don't have enough clothes, bedding, safety equipment, toys, books or a bassinet.
Canterbury
Just over a year ago I decided it would be fun to work my way up to a 10km fun run. After 14 months, multiple setbacks, months of physio and acupuncture, and two sets of shoes, I'm finally ready to take on the 10k event at the ASB Christchurch Marathon in June 2017.
As hard as going from couch potato to 10km has been, it's nothing compared to the struggle that is raising a baby when you don't have enough supplies to give your baby a really good start. It's hard to think of your baby's future when you're struggling with homelessness, low income, drug dependency, family violence or an uncertain immigration status.
Luckily for families in Christchurch, Little Sprouts is able to help. Working through charity partners such as Aviva (formerly Women's Refuge), Barnardos, Christchurch Women's Hospital and Early Start, we provide vulnerable families with everything they need to ensure their baby has the best possible start to life.
Our packs have a retail value of $1500 and include the following:
- a year's worth of clothing
- smoke alarm, digital thermometer, socket covers
- a merino sleeping bags
- bassinet and bedding (if required)
- toys and books
- nappies
- blankets and swaddles
- socks, booties, mittens and hats
- and so much more, all provided to the family for FREE
Since June 2015 we have given away 67 packs to families in need - totalling over $100,000 worth of baby gear :D
The items supplied in our packs come from a variety of sources - second hand goods in excellent condition, hand crafted items, items donated by corporates and items purchased using branch funds.
In June 2017 we expect to be giving away four packs via our charity partners. To supply the merino sleeping bags, teethers, smoke alarms, thermometers and socket covers for these packs will cost $480, and this is the amount I'm trying to fundraise.
I'm the branch administrator for Little Sprouts Christchurch. I maintain our online pack request system, write funding applications and help organise the preparation and dispersal of our packs.
