Fundraising for Aviva (formerly Christchurch Women's Refuge)
Christchurch, Canterbury
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and I have set a goal to run at least 150km in 31 days to raise money and awareness for violence against women in Aotearoa, with all funds going to Aviva Christchurch.
My fundraising goal is $1,000, but my biggest goal is to start a conversation.
The recent Cornell case and the conversations surrounding it have been incredibly upsetting and shown how often violence against women is discussed only after something horrific happens, and how quickly conversations can turn into questioning, blaming or disbelieving women.
Violence against women is not just a fleeting news story. It affects women and families in our communities every day.
I would also love more men to be part of this conversation. This isn't about saying that all men are violent. It is about recognising that men have an important role to play in challenging sexism, calling out harmful behaviour, understanding consent, supporting women who speak up, and helping create a culture where violence isn't tolerated.
If I run further or raise more than $1,000, I’ll be absolutely stoked. But if this fundraiser starts even one important conversation, or helps one person feel supported, it will have achieved something meaningful.
You don't have to donate to support this cause. Talk about it. Listen. Read. Challenge harmful attitudes. Believe women. Have the uncomfortable conversations.
