200km in 24 hours for Camp Purple!

Christchurch, Canterbury

Living with Crohn’s Disease or Colitis as an Adult is no easy feat. An invisible disease causing extreme pain, awkward moments, fatigue & mental distress.

Now imagine being a child living with Crohn’s or Colitis. These challenges make every day “kid life” incredibly limiting. Days off school, not being able to participate in fun school events or outings with friends, embarrassment, pain, surgeries, medicines & mental distress. Camp Purple is an all expenses paid camp for Kiwi Kids with Crohn’s or Colitis - fully catered to the needs of kids with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Run by IBD Doctors & Nurses, it’s an amazing week long camp experience to show our kids that with the right tools, mindset and support - they can live a full & active life. https://crohnsandcolitis.org.nz/camp-purple-live

Having lived with Crohn’s disease for 20 plus years, multiple rounds of medical intervention, complications & recently undergoing a bowel resection in Sept 2024 myself - endurance running & racing has been one of my biggest tools in staying physically & mentally well. If I can inspire one person to live outside their perceived limitations of their diagnosis - mission complete.

On 4/10/2025 - I am attempting to run 200km in 24 hours at https://www.nz6dayultramarathon.com/ to raise $5000 for Camp Purple. Camp Purple costs approx $150,000 annually - our collective support will be small but significant. Join me & support this amazing cause for our kids living with Crohn’s & Colitis in NZ.

I know you’ll be eager to know how it went 💜  5 October 2025

Firstly I am just so over the moon with the amazing support from YOU - $11,175 is a huge sum for camp purple. You are directly impacting children’s lives with your donation! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I’m currently horizontal with my feet up. If you’re CHCH based you would have seen torrential rain and high winds on the forecast. It was manageable in the early hours/through the evening where I reached huge personal bests for 100km and 100mile distance. I’m very sad to let you know that at 168km I was pulled off course for being hypothermic - I was in a very bad way and another athlete recognised I was in an unsafe position. She sacrificed her race to turn around and head back in the direction of race hun/contacted marshals. I was in an absolute state, now that I’m coherent it was actually very frightening. I initially said I’d like to continue on however race directors made the call for health and safety which I fully respected.

So unfortunately I only made it to 19 hours, 53 minutes and 168km. I am very disappointed and sad because the goal was in sight. This is one of those things you cannot control. I’ll be reliving this experience over in my head over the coming weeks and the silver linings will shine I know. For now I rest and I can be so incredibly proud of the huge amount of money raised for our kids living with Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitits.

Samira x
