20km for 20 Girls - Educating Girls Globally

Lucy and Annie are excited to be walking 20km each on Sunday 16th June to raise funds to extend a girls boarding hostel in Malawi, so that 20 additional girls can go to school safely and happily!

WHY WE ARE FUNDRAISING?

In 2017, there was a serious need for a girls' boarding hostel at Kubuthu Community Day Secondary School, in Malawi. The school roll for girls was dropping dramatically for students aged 14+, as girls had to travel far and wide to get to the rural school. Those who managed to find lodgings close to the school lay cramped up on the dirt next to pigs, and faced the threat of men breaking in to their tiny rooms.

When EGG started to build a hostel for the girls, the community responded with speed. The neighbouring villages all pitched in with building materials, including bricks and sand for the construction. The roll for girls at the school began to rise. The hostel was completed, and 40 girls found a new home - right next to the school. Together, safe and comfortable, they live and learn each day.

Since then, the roll for girls has steadily increased, to the point where girls now outnumber the boys in school (!!). Families queue at the school, at the end of each term, trying to get a spot for their girl into the hostel, so she can be safe and happy while she attends school.

EGG and its fabulous partner, Build A School, are thrilled to announce the extension of the hostel, to enable a further 20 girls to be accommodated at Kabuthu Secondary School. We are even more thrilled to announce we have ALMOST reached our fundraising goal to do so. However, we still need to cover another 10% of our costs in order to reach our goal.

The community has started talking again. Anticipating the extension, the villages have started piling up bricks again, so that construction can get underway soon. They want better access to education for their girls; so do we.
