On June 20-21 we are participating in the 'Mount Everest Challenge' at Mt Maunganui. Between us, we are aiming to climb 38 times in 24hrs.
Bay of Plenty
Flynn Finlayson, Joshua Rowe and Adam Wong-Toi will be attempting an adapted ‘Mount Everest Challenge’ at Mount Maunganui on the 20th and 21st of June 2020.
This challenge usually involved climbing Mount Maunganui (232m in elevation) 38 times in 50 days - the equivalent of the height of Mount Everest - 8848m in elevation. However, to change up the challenge a bit, the three of us are aiming to complete this challenge in 24 hours instead of 50 days.
We are supporting the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Education Trust. Due to the nature of the trust, we believe an adapted Mount Everest Challenge is fitting because Sir Edmund Hillary was one of two of the first people who successfully summited Mt Everest in 1953.
As the three of us are Duke of Edinburgh Gold Participants we feel that supporting the trust who is dealing with financial hardships following COVID-19 is an appropriate cause because of our affiliation with the trust. Flynn and Josh have also participated in one of the Trusts week-long Outdoor Programmes in late 2019.
“This program has led to one of the most incredible weeks of my life. From team-building and problem-solving challenges to white water rafting down the Tongariro River, the week at Hillary outdoors was a life-changing experience. Not only were there incredible experiences, such as a gorging trip in the Upper Mangatepopo River, abseiling next to a waterfall and finally an incredible overnight expedition up on Mt Ruapehu, but the knowledge and friendships that I gained will last me for a lifetime. Another thing that made this week so incredible was our instructor who got nicknamed “Superman Seb” and with his guidance, we were all able to experience the outdoors in a fun, exciting way. One of the highlights being a 150m slide down the side of Mt Ruapehu to make up for some lost time. In the end, the Hillary Outdoors Education Trust allowed me to have a great week in the outdoors and give me some unforgettable experiences.” - Flynn
We thank you for your sponsorship and in turn your support for us and the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Education Trust.
The group of us have personal involvement with the Sir Edmund Hillary Trust Outdoor Education Trust either directly through the programmes they offer and/or indirectly through Duke Of Edinburgh Hillary Award.
We are halfway there! 20 June 2020
Thanks for the support everyone! It's really helped us for the first half of the challenge today.
We have been going for 9 hours and have conquered over half our goal already!
7 ascents each done, and dealing with some less than perfect weather has been a bit of a dampener, but we have pushed past it.
Bring on the night!
