21yo track rider running a marathon for my good friend and colleage Sophia Malthus who became a tetraplegic after falling from a racehorse.

Auckland

Dear friends,

I have created this page to raise funds for a very special woman who you may have stumbled across on the news or the internet recently.

On 29th November 2016, my friend, my ex strapper, workmate and my inspiration fell from a racehorse while fulfilling her dream of becoming a jockey. In doing this she sustained a C4/C5 fracture on her neck which paralysed her from the collarbone down.

Sophia Malthus is a one of a kind woman. Before her accident she woke at 4am to start work at 5. She finished work at 3pm in the afternoon with a couple of hours break in between the long shift. Where most would use this break time to rest before tending to the racehorses in the afternoon, Sophia would run. The positive attitude, motivation and diligence that Sophia held prior to her accident has carried right through, and will not falter until she is on her feet again.

My name is Ceilidh; I am Sophia's friend and ex workmate. I also rode at the track where she was injured, and seeing the accident has impacted me in a way that will forever remind me of how lucky I am to have full use of my limbs where others are not so fortunate. As well as devastating me, the now tetraplegic Sophia has inspired me. She is bright, positive and above all incredibly determined. The current New Zealand healthcare system does not fund the alternative treatment that Sophia seeks to help her dream to walk again. She wishes to engage in stem cell treatment, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and even virtual reality walking and running.

I am running a full marathon (ASB Auckland) this October for Sophia, who is not so fortunate to have this opportunity. No doubt the run will be hard, but it can never compare to the pain that this wonderful lady has endured.

Please donate to my page to help this little lady get on her feet again.

UPDATE: Sophia has been accepted into an incredible research facility in Thailand which offers stem cell treatment for 40 days. They currently have a 100% improvement rate for those who have sustained similar injuries to Sophia. She needs to raise an extra 135k to help her get there. Now is the perfect opportunity to flick a donation her way!

Ceilidh Johnston's involvement (page creator)

I am Sophia's friend and ex colleague. She rode the horse which I usually ride that morning, so in a way I feel involved. She's bright, enthusiastic and motivated and deserves every bit of help she can get.
