  • A WALK TO REMEMBER - FINAL UPDATE

      30 November 2025

    WEEK 14 – Final Update 🎉

Well, after three months I’ve finally arrived at the last day of my campaign. It’s been quite an amazing period in my life — I’ve never done anything quite like this before, and I had no idea how things would pan out. I’ve met many people I didn’t previously know, many of whom have had personal experience with Alzheimer’s in their families or through close friends 💜.

I’ve also received donations from people I don’t know — and probably never will — which has been incredibly humbling 🙏.

Saturday brought the Dance for a Cause at the Alexandra District Club, which seemed to be a huge success 💃🕺. There was dancing aplenty — people dancing to music they’d probably never heard before, but simply couldn’t resist moving to! .

We raised $800 on the night from ticket sales, and with recent donations our total should reach around $7,000 🎉.

Thank you to Shane from Radio Central for giving me the platform to share my campaign daily — without that support, I’m sure we wouldn’t have raised as much or built the same awareness of this disease 💜. And finally, thank you to everyone who has been part of my campaign, and especially to those who have donated and helped raise this amazing amount 💕There’s still time to donate if you haven’t already — the campaign closes at midnight tonight ⏳.

We arrive at my final week of the campaign, & yes this is my penultimate report. Was that thank goodness, I hear you say.

So we start with a quick feedback from yesterday's parkrun which was a purple & fundraising day for Alzheimer's. Normally 60-80 participants, yesterday 105 which was brilliant & a sea of purple as many wore the Memory Walk T shirts. Also awash with many coloured tutu's made it a real special feeling for yesterday's event. Thank you to everyone for turning up, the regulars & quite a few 1st timers, & a special thank you to all those who donated towards the cause. I don't have a figure which was raised yet.

Also donations have continued this week. One person paying for their goods at the checkout in New World Alexandra, recognised my shirt & gave me a donation on the spot, as they too had someone in their family with Alzheimer's.

You may have seen my article in the local paper, thank you to the Editor & Reporter for including it this week. However the piece next to it was all about funding cuts for Alzheimer's in Queenstown & Wanaka areas, which will most certainly impact on Central Otago as well. So if anyone has any ideas, don't be shy about coming forward.

I did my 3rd Sunday radio show today at 2pm on Radio Central, so just one more week to go.

Don't forget to listen in every week day to Radio Central, for the Northern Soul track of the day after the 7.30am news. Alex/Crom 91.9FM; Teviot Valley 94.3FM; Maniototo 104.3FM

  • A WALK TO REMEMBER - WEEK 12 UPDATE

      16 November 2025

Yesterday saw me complete my 3rd & final walk for my campaign as part of the Queenstown Marathon. I was accompanied by Sally (Sal) Booth who was the person behind the Parkrun starting in Alexandra last year. Over 13000 took part in all distances, 4000 in the marathon, it felt like we must have had the remainder, as it took us 20 minutes to get to the start after the 10km had actually started. Still what another great experience, just to be a part of it. The organisation & communication was terrific & again the enthusiasm shown from most of the volunteers just makes you feel happy. We walked the first 8km then Sal said why don't we jog the last 2km, which we did, finishing thru the streets of Queenstown, in a time of 1h 30m, shaving 9 minutes off the last 10km. I thanked Sal for giving me a problem for any future 10kms. With about 75 metres to the finish, we were accompanied by my 6 year old grandson Joey who ran through the finishing line with us. That's how we make memories for all of us.

Thank you to those for your kind comments after last week's update as many didn't exactly know Ann's current condition.

2 weeks left now, 22nd Purple TUTU Parkrun, don't miss it, then 28th DANCE for a Cause at the Alexandra District Club, tickets only $10, should be another memorable night, if not for the music, just seeing some of those dance moves.

Please keep donating, it would be terrific to get over the $7000 figure.

Thank you again to everyone for your continued support.

    WEEK 11 UPDATE

4 weeks my campaign to go, & I've had a number of people enquire to the health of Ann, my wife. This update will be different to previous ones. For those of you who aren't aware of Ann's situation, Ann has been in a care home since Jan 2024, unable to walk for the last 12 months, or feed herself or communicate, one day is just like the next for her.

I try to go in every day to give Ann, her evening meal, one to see her, & two to take the pressure off the wonderful staff.

This is the reason why I started this campaign to raise awareness yet again of this awful disease Alzheimer's & try to raise a few extra $$$ for those in Central Otago.

I never dreamed of reaching $6000, wouldn't it be great to raise a little bit more. I can assure you, every $$$ raised will go towards the cause.

By this time next week, I will have done my final challenge, the 10km walk in Queenstown on the 15th, & my 2nd spell on the radio next Sunday 16th.

Don't forget to listen in every week day to Radio Central, for the Northern Soul track of the day after the 7.30am news.

    91.9FM Alex/Crom

    94.3FM Teviot Valley

    104.3FM Maniototo

22nd Nov, Parkrun Alexandra (5km) TUTU Day & PURPLE Fundraising day.

28th DANCE for a CAUSE at the ADC - Please get in contact for more information.

  • WEEK 7 UPDATE

      12 October 2025
    Main image

Now we have reached the HALFWAY point & the total to date has now reached $5325. Donations continue to pour in from Central Otago, Teviot Valley & the Maniototo, quite incredible.

Yesterday saw us achieve the 2nd event, 10km walk in Cromwell. over 400 participated in the event, with 5 of us walking for Alzheimer's. We were hopeful of beating our previous time set in Dunedin, Though when setting off into a very strong headwind, we realised to do this would not be easy. At half way we were ahead of schedule & thought with a tail wind this should be achievable, however I suppose stopping to take photos & a little time spent at the drink stations, made it a little tighter than it should have been. It was a great sight to see so many people along the route shouting encouragement, & also the numbers at the finish applauding when we crossed the line, in a time 3 minutes quicker.

Thank you to those who came to see us at the finish & also to Lynne Symons of Alzheimer's CO & her daughter Freya.

This week I must also say a huge to Chris Langston, DJ/Radio Presenter from Queenstown who has produced a 90 minute programme of Northern Soul, Tamla Motown, Jazz & little Funk all for the cause. This will be aired on Radio Central, & having already had the chance to listen to it, it's a great listen so watch out for further details.

Also a special mention to Alzheimer's NZ who have become aware of my campaign A Walk to Remember & will be featuring my story over the coming weeks. Thank you.

What a week for donations, over $1000 which brings the total now to $4850. I know this is becoming a habit, but thank you to everyone & those who have donated this week. With another 7 weeks to go, which includes the Queenstown Marathon on 15th November. I am now wondering how much we can together raise for Alzheimers in Central Otago.

Thanks to the Central App for doing their piece this week & again to Shane of Radio Central.

REMINDER - any business/company wanting to promote their business can do so FOC just after the 7.30am news, which is PRIME TIME/DRIVE TIME.

Tribus Technology a recruitment company in Sydney have sponsored the slot but offered it to any local business.

    Call SHANE on 0274 742 636 or email shane@radiocentral.nz

Why would you not want to promote your business on the radio FOC.

    Hi everyone

As I promised I would provide you with a weekly update via email, plus the information will be on my givealittle & facebook pages.

Another busy week for me, this time handing posters out to businesses in Clyde.

Donations continue to come in from around the world, friends & family back in the Northern Hemisphere, & friends & businesses locally & Australia.

This week a donation of $1000 was received from a business in Sydney which brings the givealittle page to over $3500. Plus donations direct to the Alzheimers Society means we are tracking close to $4000 in Week 4.

I can only say, THANK YOU, to everyone who has supported this financially & also to those who have helped me so far along this campaign journey.

To remind you the next 2 10km walks are on:-

    Cromwell Half Marathon 11th October

    Queenstown Marathon 15th November

So the campaign will run until the end of November, which means another 9 weeks to go.
