A WALK TO REMEMBER - The Unexpected Journey
Alexandra, Otago
Emigrating in 2018 from the UK to NZ to be near our family in Queenstown & in Sydney, we were ill prepared for what was around the corner. Within 2 years my wife had started with depression which was the trigger for dementia. Now 5 years on & not yet 70, she is now in a care home, & the life we expected to live, has been replaced by a different kind of journey. However, from this I have come to greatly admire all those who are involved with this horrendous disease. The daily routine of those carers, nurses, activity co-ordinators, is just incredible. Not to mention the friends & family who gave & continue to give their support along the way. If you have known a family member or just a good friend suffer from this disease then you will fully understand.
The Alzheimers Society offers a variety of services that can support care partners & people with dementia. By supporting me in doing these walks is directly supporting those with Dementia & those who give their lives to caring for others.
Thank you.
A WALK TO REMEMBER - FINAL UPDATE 30 November 2025
WEEK 14 – Final Update 🎉
Well, after three months I’ve finally arrived at the last day of my campaign. It’s been quite an amazing period in my life — I’ve never done anything quite like this before, and I had no idea how things would pan out. I’ve met many people I didn’t previously know, many of whom have had personal experience with Alzheimer’s in their families or through close friends 💜.
I’ve also received donations from people I don’t know — and probably never will — which has been incredibly humbling 🙏.
Saturday brought the Dance for a Cause at the Alexandra District Club, which seemed to be a huge success 💃🕺. There was dancing aplenty — people dancing to music they’d probably never heard before, but simply couldn’t resist moving to! .
We raised $800 on the night from ticket sales, and with recent donations our total should reach around $7,000 🎉.
Thank you to Shane from Radio Central for giving me the platform to share my campaign daily — without that support, I’m sure we wouldn’t have raised as much or built the same awareness of this disease 💜. And finally, thank you to everyone who has been part of my campaign, and especially to those who have donated and helped raise this amazing amount 💕There’s still time to donate if you haven’t already — the campaign closes at midnight tonight ⏳.
Thank you so much for your support & throughout the journey over the past few years.
