Next month I will be attempting to hike to Everest Base Camp. I'd also like to raise money for rebuilding Nepal after the 2015 earthquake

Wellington

Next month I will be attempting to hike my way from Lukla to Mt Everest Base Camp. Now, I am not the most hardcore of hikers but there is something mesmerising about getting up close to Mt Everest that encourages me to attempt this crazy feat! And while this will be an amazing achievement personally, it would be even better to be able to use this to help raise funds for the ongoing rebuilding of Nepal after the 2015 earthquake.

Having briefly visited Nepal and had a failed attempt to get to Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side (via car) in October 2013, I have always wanted to return to the Himalayas and, as Sir Ed would say, "knock the bastard off". After reading about the devastating effects of last year's earthquakes where 9,000 people were killed (including 22 climbers at Everest Base Camp), 22,000 injured and 3.5 million left homeless, I want to achieve more from this trek and help the Nepalese community continue to rebuild their homes one year on from the disaster.

The Himalayan Trust was founded by the late Sir Edmund Hillary and his wife to help bring quality education, safe water, and better healthcare to communities living in this remote, mountainous region of Nepal. They have also been heavily involved with the relief and rebuilding work after the devastating effects of the earthquakes in 2015. More information about this wonderful charity can be found here http://himalayantrust.org/

Any support you can offer this charity will be greatly appreciated. Big or small, whatever you are able to donate will make a difference, and help to get Nepal back on their feet (while I will be recovering mine!)

And for some geeky info, here is a rundown on some stats to give you an idea of what it is that I will be attempting.

Length: 120km round trip

Duration: 12-14 days

Starting Height: 2,860m - 63m taller than Mt Ruapehu & 1,515m taller than UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis!

Highest Point: 5,643m (Kala Patthar summit) - 1,919m taller than NZ's highest mountain, Mt Cook!

Total Ascent: 2,783m - 3.4 times the height of the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa!

Distance from Everest Base Camp to Summit: 3,468m

Sir Ed conquered what was previously unconquerable and then devoted his work to helping the Himalayan communities. While my feat is nowhere near on the same scale, any help I can do is definitely worthwhile
