Ang's Mt Everest Challenge 2018

  • 76/76 Double Mt Everest Challenge completed!

I've been incredibly slack with updates. Since my last update I have reached goals that I really didn't think I would of been able to achieve at the beginning.

On Saturday I set a personal best of 5 back to back climbs. Was a great achievement for me.

On Sunday I bested that by doing 6 back to back. A big thanks must go out to the Barefoot runner, if it wasn't for his encouragement I most likely would've quit on the 4th one.

Sunday's climb also saw me having to borrow my daughter's size 9 shoe's for my size 7 feet 😂 My faithful $9:97 clearance shoe's from the warehouse finally wore out on Saturday. I did a lot of tripping up the steps in my girl's sz9's and developed a nice size blister 😑 I wasn't thinking about the shop not being open until after my usual climbing time on Sunday when I drove home on Saturday . . . After my 6 climbs I walked straight to Smith's sport's shoe's and bought me a pair of the most comfortable shoe's, I wish I'd had these from the beginning!!

Yesterday morning - Tuesday 27th March I completed the last 2 climbs needed to finish the Mt Everest Challenge for the second time - it was awesome knowing I'd made it back to basecamp 😀

This Challenge has given me so much. Physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. A renewed appreciation for life, it has reset my mind and outlook on all thing's, it has truly been a blessing.

I have set a new goal, inspired by the barefoot runner, ONE day, I will walk Mauao barefoot - not sure when as my tender feet have issues walking on grass 😂😂 but one day I will 😀

Thank you all so much for donating, for the encouragement and keeping up with my progress, it really has meant a lot to me. You can still donate via the DONATE button

I'll see you at next year's Mt Everest Challenge 😍😍

    P.S

Kawakawa balm work's AMAZINGLY for blisters

  • 18/38 on my way back to Basecamp

I've been pretty slack on the updates. I uploaded a photo of each climb into the gallery for my evidence 😀

The last climb I did was on Sunday afternoon with 3 of my daughter's. This time was the first time my 4yr old had ever been up. She was estatic to stand on the rock where people take their photo's, she was excited to be walking up Mauao for the Everest challenge, she was less than impressed with the fact we had to walk back down all them steps and not just go home instead 😂

So here I am, laying on the floor at home, contemplating if I'm going to go up today . . . I have the left it too late and now there's possibly no saving me from my laziness - my aim to have the trek back to basecamp by the 27th is being extended further out, with only 3 days to spare I can see I'm possibly going to be walking my brains out to get this completed by the 30th. But hey . . . At least I can do this, I'm healthy, not so unfit anymore unlike a lot of people who aren't able to do this even if they wanted to.

1 in 3 people will use hospice service's this year, we will know someone who knows someone who has or will . . . Please, if you can DONATE, thank you to all who have already, and to all who have shared my page, read my updates and given moral support, it truly does mean so much THANK YOU!

18 Down, 20 to go until I'm back at basecamp 😀

  • Heading back to Base Camp 6/38

    Main image

On my 35th climb, I started thinking about what happens when I reach the fabled 38th climb. When I reached it, then what? Do I just stop? Kinda seemed . . . Like an incomplete journey. Forever stuck at the top of Mt Everest, just, ya know, Everesting 😀

The day after completing the Mt Everest Challenge, I woke at my 'Mt Everest climbing' time, got ready then realised, girrrl your done with Mt Everest! . . . Crazy me or wanna be fit me replied 'oh hell no girrrl we're going back to Base Camp!'

I'm now 6 climbs in, 32 away from Base Camp. . . I didn't go up yesterday - I usually can't on Monday's. Woke this morning to the wind . . . And I piked out . . . I can do dark, cold and rain but I can't do dark, rain and wind - stiff breeze no probs, just not gusty wind in the dark lol I have always had a bit of a phobia of the dark and the wind, the 2 combined with rain are like kryptonite is to superman for me 😂

    Soooo . . . Until either

A ) the wind calms down

    B ) the sunrises

C ) possibly when tomorrow arrives

Ima be sitting today out 😀

If you'd like to donate to Waipuna Hospice hit the DONATE button on here, much appreciated 😍

I completed the Mt Everest Challenge this morning!!

    37/38

Huffed, puffed and sweated my way up in the dark. It's amazing how quickly it seems that the sun is rising later and later. Reached the top took the evidence photo, it was no different to the day before except I managed to time it with someone walking past with a torch so there is a slight difference from yesterday.

    THIRTY EIGHT!!/38

On the way down from the 37th climb, I did some rough calculations and figured that if I didn't muck around by:

A: taking photo's - there wasn't enough light for my ph to be able to capture anything amazing so this wouldn't be a problem

    Or

B: catch pokemon - this was a problem as I had a feeling I was going to catch a shiny Aron on my 38th climb

That I would be able to complete it and get home before 8

So I went for it. I don't know why but the 2nd climb is always easier. I got to the top and what do you think happened?? YES I CAUGHT A SHINY ARON aka a Pokemon 😀😀 man was I stoked!! So that explains the photo of the pokemon accompanying this update

If you'd like to donate please hit the DONATE button 😍

    38 DONE COMPLETE

Thinking about doing another 38 climbs as the climb down - otherwise I'm stuck at the top of Mt Everest

I struggled to get motivated this morning. It's amazing how our mind's can do 'job's' on us, how easily we can give in to our justifications at time's. I managed to tell lazy me to shut up, get up and get over there. It was raining on the way over and my inner sloth was in full swing 'leave it, do it later . . . Your gonna get wet . . . Your almost there, whats a day off??

. . . Why don't you just get a coffee and something for breakfast instead - that last one almost had me 😂

I got out the van the warm sea breeze hit me and yes, I almost did walk straight to the cafe instead 😂 it took every ounce of willpower to walk straight past it and to the base track.

Felt the burn halfway up the hobbiton steps, managed to get to the top of them without stopping, took a quick breather and thanked my good self for making me walk past the cafe.

The rain started as I got to the first gate, the same rain I was earlier using as a deterrent I was now welcoming. I made good time for someone who wanted to stay home. The rain eased to heavy spitting by the time I got to the summit, took the standard evidence photo then headed back down.

As always I felt great afterwards, glad I didn't listen to my inner sloth this morning - 9 times outta 10 she is always wrong!

P.S I didn't even go to the cafe for a coffee or breakfast after. I will save that for the 38th climb 😁

If you'd like to donate, the DONATE button is eagerly awaiting for you to press it 😍

35th climb completed this morning. Was a good walk, sweated and puffed my way up, its awesome to see other people looking in the same condition as I am 😂

Earlyish morning Mauao climbs is definitely the best time to go, temperature wise.

I didn't manage to capture the colours of the sky today, I was on a tight timeframe, only pointing and shooting with fingers crossed that I caught a decent one . . . That didn't happen. The sky was almost holographic pinks through to hue's of blue's, was very pretty. . . .

Ran down as I was going to run out of time to get me a coffee from Sidetrack if I walked 😂

If you'd like to donate hit the DONATE button to do so . . . THANK YOU!! ❤

My Whanau spent the day at pilot bay today. We swam, ate, swam and ate again then I decided seeing as I was already there I might as well save the gas and get some climbs in.

    33/38

Seeing as we were at Pilot Bay I decided to walk up the 4WD track, the thought of the shadey parts was a definite attraction. I'm definitely not a sun/heat person so the thought of saving gas was not seeming such a good thing after all. IT WAS HOT! I was sweating like underarms from a lynx add. Made it to the top grateful that the next part was downhill on the Waikorire track (the stairs)

    34/38

For my 34th climb I wished I was Harry Potter and could've flown on my broomstick to bypass the first sets of stairs at the beginning - why the heck are they so ruthless???!!! As slow as I was going I got to the summit sooner than I expected YAY!! I went back down the 4WD track to Pilot bay. The colours of the sea today was absolutely beautiful, which I haven't managed to capture that well.

    3rd March 2018

Completed my 31st climb yesterday/Saturday. Couldn't update yesterday so here it is now 😁

Was a good climb up, it was raining when I left home, not so at the Mt, which is what I've been noticing since I started this challenge. The temperature was perfect. Not as many people were out as there has been in previous day's.

I was planning on going up again in the evening but left it too late for my eyes and driving lol

Couldn't update on Friday or Saturday for some reason so here they are now a couple of days late

Completed my 29th and 30th climb on Friday evening. I'm starting to get the hang of these back to back climbs and in an odd way I'm actually enjoying them. Takes it out of me but feel a good sense of accomplishment afterwards. Thinking of the reason why I'm doing this, the people it helps, really inspires me to push through the 'I can't do this' thoughts that pop into my head at the hard parts.

Photo is taken at the top of Mauao looking towards Matakana Island, sunset wasn't much but the clouds were cool!

Didn't think I was going to get a chance to get up Mauao this morning until I realised if I boosted up I'd be back down in time to pick Paul up from work

    Unfortunately

The words BOOST and UP THE MOUNT do not go so easily together with me 😂 also forgetting I'd broken and set a personal record the evening before more or less guaranteed a more gentler pace was to be set instead

So I completed #28/38, I was late to pick Paul up from work BUT he was late out anyway and apologised for making me wait - no corrections needed 😂😂 Moral of the story, be a Nike and . . . JUST DO IT

I broke another personal record today. I went up Mauao 3X back to back. It was never something I had even thought about doing let alone achieving.

The seed was planted after talking to a couple on the way to the base yesterday. They suggested I test myself and try for 3 back to back, with doing the Mt Everest Challenge it would be an extra incentive, plus get me out of my comfort zone.

I was halfway up on my second climb when I realised I think I can go up a third time, by the time I got to the direction stone I knew I could do a third.

Obviously I survived the 3rd climb and I must say in much better shape than I thought I would. I saw a tui halfway up, I took that as a sign that I was going to make it. . . I was definitely thinking of steak by the time I got to the summit. The walk down was quick as I couldn't stop thinking about food 😂😂

Not sure if I'll attempt this again. Aside from the fact that finding the time to fit one climb in is a bit of a mish, I'm quite happy doing the double and solo climbs. Big ups to the 38 in a day peeps - that is just honest to God Beast mode material!!

Feel free to hit the donate button to givealittle or a lot to Waipuna Hospice 🤗

I had rest day yesterday. I looked forward to a later start yet still woke at Mt climb time dammit lol

    22/38

There was a brisk cool wind along the main beach early this morning, I even went back to my van to get my jersey, not that I was cold for long. I expected this mornings climb to be easier after my rest day . . . Unfortunately, not so haha! Geez did it take a lot out of me getting up there this morning!

Oh and P.S: the wind remained on the beach, it didn't fan the sweat from my eyes after the hobbiton steps - when I really needed it. Barely a whisper of a breeze at the summit.

    23/38

I headed up Mauao around 12:30pm for my 2nd climb of the day. This time I decided to go up the Oruahine track. I really enjoy going along this track, so many beautiful sights. Even though it takes abit longer, it doesn't seem to be so hardout on you as the Waikorire track aka the stairs way. The heat wasn't so bad, the sun mainly remained behind the clouds and I made it to the top in a lot better condition than this mornings climb. The only issue here is I had to go the supermarket afterwards - not the greatest idea although the air con was appreciated

    24/38

Started up at 6pm for my 3rd climb of the day. I went the Waikorire track aka THE STAIRS. I thought this would be my undoing, makes me so dam happy to say NOT EVEN OW! It was a really good climb, still left me red faced, sweating and puffing, No where on the levels of this mornings climb.

Not sure if I'll do more than one climb tomorrow, I've got a busy day ahead of me, I know I'll get at least one in. Clothes are on the clothers airer as I type, hopefully dry by the morning.

Well I truly am amazing my ownself now. I went up Mauao twice this evening, that's back to back, two days in a row, I must be getting fitter!

Who would of thought I could do that?! Not me that's for sure! Up until November last year I was allergic to excersise, walking my kid's to kindy, walking around the supermarket, around my whare and sometimes to the mailbox was the extent of my physical activities.

It took a good friend of mine, who was so annoying, who harped on and on at me to go for a walk and wouldn't quit that I finally agreed just to get her to shut the hell up.

We walked the length of FLAT pilot bay one night, so no one would see, and I was puffed. I was also shocked that I actually enjoyed it. So much that we did it again a couple of days later once my body had time to recover 😂

It is thanks to my bestie that lead me to believe that I could complete this Mt Everest Challenge - thanks girl!! 😁

A shout out to my kid's Dad for accompanying me on my mission this evening, for not letting me quit and only do 1 after we smelt the delcious smell of cooking meat from the English Sky Sports people at the campgrounds 😂

    Friday 23 Feb - 16/38

Completed my 16th climb on Friday evening with the company of my 16 and almost 10yr old daughter's and their Dad. We walked up the 4WD track, hoping to catch the sunrise which wasn't as brilliant as the last couple but still beautiful to see. Descended the Mt by phone light - it gets real dark, real fast!

    Saturday 24th Feb - 17/38

My daughter turned 4 today. She wanted to come up the Mt for it. She failed the criteria to go up the Mt - would not wake up lol I was accompanied by my almost 10yr and 6yr old daughter's. We made it to the top and back to the base before the heat really set in. These 2 girls are developing an addiction for walking up the Mt

    Sunday 25th Feb

    18/38

Accomplished a goal of mine this morning - 2 back to back Mauao climbs 😀 left later than ever this morning forgetting the women's triathlon was on and had to park almost 1 kilometer away haha! Completed the first summit of the morning with my 18yr old daughter, her partner and my kid's Dad. Fooooòooòooooweeeeeeeeee was it a SCORCHER!!! Talk about sweat city

    2ND CLIMB

    19/38

My girl and her partner decided to sit this one out and go get breakfast. So her Dad and I hiked back up. Felt the burn as soon as I said ok lets go haha!! Got to the top and quickly sought shade. Awesome sense of achievment for me. 😀

After 2 day's off I was back up Mauao this morning to complete my 15th climb.

I hurt my knee getting out of my van with my 2yr old on Monday arvo - worst timing! So had an extra day off to let it settle down. Wasn't too bad going up, a bit ouchy on the way down, just taking it easy for the next couple of climbs

This morning was a lot cooler, with the humidity at humane levels again, and a bit of a breeze it was near perfect conditions. There was briefly, very light rain when I reached 3/4 of the way up. Lot's of people out. So many that I don't really need to use a light until I'm on my way down, I just keep within other hikers light beam 😀 saves my ph battery too! 😉

I completed my 14th climb yesterday evening with my soon to be 10yr old daughter. Took longer than normal thanks to my sore knee. Going up wasn't an issue, going down was abit ouchy.

5 of my children made the climb up Mauao with me this morning. For the 3 youngest, it was the first sunrise they have seen in their lives. They were excited and blown away by the beauty of it.

They've been very interested in what Mum has been doing every morning and some afternoons. My 6yr old voiced her concerns while we were walking along the boardwalk towards the base "Mum, did you know thats a big mountain?" The view from the summit left them speechless and asking to come again next time.

    12/38

My second climb for today was this evening around 6:30 with a good friend of mine. We decided to go up the 4WD track. We were just past the water tank when we saw the helicopter. We knew something had happened as it seemed to be searching the side of the mount.

When I reached the summit and saw only 2 people we knew something definitely wasn't right. We found out once we'd left the Mt a paraglider had lost their life in an accident. I send my condolences, thoughts and aroha to the person who lost their life this afternoon on Mauao, especially to their Whanau and friends xox

Some say, you never meet people by accident, there is always a reason.

I started out this morning on my 10th climb for the Challenge in a so so mood, not an ounce of enthusiasm. I reached the top of the Hobbiton steps - the first set at the start -already huffing and puffing in the extreme haha! It was here that I met the amazing Laura (Pictured in the photo attached to this update)

I had the pleasure to walk with her on her 13th climb since YESTERDAY EVENING!! Her and her mate Nate have been walking the Mt since 7pm lastnight! They aim to complete the challenge by midnight tonight. She'd had an hour's sleep from 2-3am - sheezus and here I've been feeling sorry for myself on getting 4-5hrs sleep a night 😂 Hearing her talk (I still can't get over the fact she was still able to talk/be sociable AND smile) was inspiring. Hearing about her adventures, positivity, nutrition advice and just her overall energy was the boost I needed. Thank you Laura!

If your climbing the Mt today keep an eye out for them, they're wearing white Mt Everest Challenge singlets with numbers on the front. Shout out to them if you see them

Thank you to all who have donated so far, I really appreciate it, especially as it's going to help so many people and their families.

For my 9th climb of the Challenge, the weather app on my ph told me it was 20° with 90% humidity and 32% cloud cover although it didn't seem that muggy. It was a welcome change to see a reasonably clear sky this morning.

Again I was later than I anticipated, Insomnia has a knack of popping up when you really need to stick to an early start. I'm still buzzing out over the amount of people that are on their way up the Mt in the dark time of the morning.

To the person who recognized/knew me and all I could say was oh hey - forgive me I was barely breathing and even tho I had my glasses on they had fogged up and I was seeing life through blurry lenses

The photo accompanying this update was taken at 6:17am - 27mins before sunrise, I called it 'Sunglow', was of the fog withdrawing back out to sea, it was quite a cool sight, wish I'd thought to video it

Again thank you all for your donations and shares, every dollar counts ❤

    8th Climb, 2nd for today

Had a Valentine's date with my 11yr old son this evening - a walk up Mauao 😀 in reality he had a bad attitude so I made him tag along with me to walk his negativity off along the slopes of the Mt 😁 It did the trick, he said he felt good once he got to the top. That boy is so fit, by the time I got to the summit he looked like he'd been sitting there for quite some time! Hopefully some deep contemplation occured whilst he was sitting there watching everyone come and go while waiting for his Mum to arrive.

So eventually I did make it to the summit and was pleasantly surprised to see something other than dense fog/cloud. Took 'Evidence photo's' e.g the one that accompanies this update, then walked down, sat on what we reckoned was a meditation rock, watched the sheep, the sea, the people, talked and made peace then realised we were starving so headed home

. . . and that there concludes this little update

I went up Mauao for the second time yesterday. I really do prefer the early morning climbs than the day/afternoon one's. So much cooler even when it's muggy. Was hoping for a picture of a view with no cloud or fog . . . Fail lol

    7/38

There's definitely an increase in early morning foot traffic going up the Mt now, especially if you go back to sleep after the alarm goes off. The blocked off parking doesn't help, when you combine getting up late, finding a park, walking from further along than usual and needing to pick someone up from work within the next 40mins, your idea's of a casual stroll up the Mt quickly flies out the window.

Alas, it was good to see some rays of sunshine, got my hopes up for a more interesting photo at the summit, get to the top and hello Mr cloud/fog 😀

    So that's 7 down, 31 to go 😁

If you can, please donate to this awesome cause ❤

Another dark, cloudy morning with a slight drizzle here and there. I'm not feeling the greatest today, it was a struggle going up this morning . . . Was a surreal feeling walking so closely past sleeping sheep, their sleeping vibes got to me - I honestly wanted to go over, cuddle up with them and go back to sleep too . . .

I'm noticing a definite increase in the amount of people out and climbing Mauao at this hour, no doubt it has to do with the Mt Everest Challenge which is so cool to see.

Planning on spending the rest of today making myself better so I can complete another Mt Everest Challenge climb tomorrow and trying to reach more potential donors. On that note . . . PLEASE DONATE IF YOU CAN!

    5 Down, 33 to go

I didn't manage to capture a decent photo at the summit due to the weather, my ph and my lack of skill 😁 so the photo accompanying this post is from on my way up Mauao

This mornings walk up Mauao was DRY! 😀 Pretty muggy, dark and rather warm but nice and Dry all the same. Glad my ph sorted itself out to charge enough for me to be able to use the torch on it.

Wasn't much of a view at the top, due to all the cloud cover. I did get a photo of the light on the Mt and saw -

Actually, heard way before I saw it - a container ship leaving. Didn't realise they were so noisy. Was quite a cool sight although beyond my ability to get a decent shot of it in the darkness.

Tomorrow's weathers looking good for my walk, if the humidity could come down from the 90s that would be great

Until the next climb I'm now: 4 down, 34 to go

PLEASE DONATE TO THIS AWESOME CAUSE FUNDRAISING FOR WAIPUNA HOSPICE

This update was supposed to have been posted yesterday. Alas my ph had objections to the water conditions it was exposed to from my first climb yesterday morning . . . So here it is now . . . A day late . . .

    3 down 35 to go

I went up for a second time yesterday evening. I'd seen it was 99% chance of 'Rain' not 'Showers' predicted for my usual early morning climb. The chicken in me wasn't so keen, the thought of being able to have a sleep in certainly made this more appealing.

This possibly was my dumbest idea for the week, coz man did Mauao whoop my butt that 2nd climb of the day. "What were you thinking??" Seemed to be my minds soundtrack for this climb.

I found inspiration in the many Mama's I saw yesterday afternoon, with their babies on their backs. I wanted to stop and tell them how awesome they were - except I was barely breathing myself let alone able to talk 😂 I struggle getting my ownself up Mauao, let alone while carrying a baby on my back. I have the deepest respect for them. Thank you to all the Mama's and their babies I saw yesterday

On the flipside I enjoyed getting up later, mucking around and catching Mewtoo today 😀

I was joined by 4 of my daughter's for this morning's climb. Was a bit wetter than yesterday's, with cloud covering the view from the top.

Rain or shine, it's still an exhilarating feeling getting to the summit of Mauao (Mt Maunganui) It's also an awesome feeling, being able to raise funds for Waipuna Hospice to help them help people in their time of need. Please if you can make a donation - help people, help people.

    . . .

Now to get these shoe's dried before the next climb.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, I really appreciate it!

Completed my first climb of the Challenge at 6:33am. Saw lots of people out. It's a good feeling knowing so many other's are also out there raising money for Waipuna Hospice.

If you can, please donate to this awesome cause. Checkout today's Waipuna Hospice fact:

With the growth of population in Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty region, we envision caring for over 1000 patients and their families in 2018. This year alone we have to raise $2.7 million to cover our funding shortfall so we can continue to provide this high quality service to our community.
