Everyday, women are walking barefoot for hours/days to reach treatment for fistula. $700 can give a woman life-changing surgery.
Canterbury
Obstetric fistula is a horrific childbirth injury causing urinary and faecal incontinence, leaving women as social outcasts. When a woman suffering with obstetric fistula hears about the work of Hamlin Fistula, they are usually located in some of the most remote parts of Ethiopia and have to endure a laborious trek to get to the nearest hospital. For most, this will mean many kilometres of walking, usually barefoot.
The Barefoot challenge is a fundraiser set up for participants in New Zealand to complete their own walk while raising funds for the women in Ethiopia. My challenge is to hike 3 hours up Mt Grey -barefoot.
May 23 is the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula. Can you help me end fistula? Thank you!
Every woman, everywhere, needs safe childbirth. I'm walking the kms so they don't have to.
Thank you! 21 May 2021
