  • Everyone Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Face

    Bridget's personal update!

Mike Tyson once said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” Marathon training—and life—proves this true. We make plans, but injuries, setbacks, and unexpected challenges force us to adapt.

Success isn’t about sticking to the original plan; it’s about adjusting when things don’t go as expected.

Mental strength isn’t just about pushing through pain—it’s about flexibility. Training for the London Marathon, I’ve had to modify my approach due to plantar fasciitis. But my injury hasn’t, and won’t, stop me. Instead, it’s taught me to listen to my body, adjust my training, and lean on experts for guidance.

Mental resilience is understanding that setbacks don’t mean failure. They mean recalibrating, getting support from the right people, and moving forward in a new way.

Life works the same way. We map out careers, relationships, and goals, but reality often shifts. True resilience means recognizing setbacks aren’t failures—they’re opportunities to recalibrate. Strength comes not from going it alone, but from seeking the right support and trusting the process.

So when life (or marathon training) punches you in the face, remember: You can always shift your strategy, find new strength, and keep going.

It’s been a long time between updates, but we’ve officially completed Week 7 of our London Marathon training! That means we’re heading toward the halfway point in our plan this week—but we’re definitely not halfway through fundraising, so we really need your help.

💥 Challenges? Early morning weekend runs, battling the heat during the week, and getting our fueling strategies right to keep the energy levels up.

💪 Highlights? Scott has been absolutely smashing his time improvements and hill running efforts, showing some serious grit! Meanwhile, Bridget is finally back on track with her official training plan after working her way back from injury —thanks to osteo, physio, acupuncture, and, of course, doing all her "homework" from these appointments! Stronger & better than before even!!

Your support means everything to us and to MATES Matter NZ. If you haven’t donated yet, now is the perfect time! Even the cost of a coffee ☕can help support this amazing charity with us! (actually donate the cost of the muffin and you can still have the coffee!!) — let’s keep the momentum going!

Also - if you can make sure you vote for MATES Matter NZ here - https://www.the-base.co.nz/en/events/the-big-tautoko-2025/

    Onwards to Week 8! 👟💙

  • Week 2 Update: Progress and Perseverance!

      20 January 2025

We’ve officially wrapped up Week 2 of our 16-week training plan for the London Marathon, and it’s been a week of both challenges and wins. Here’s how we got on:

    Scott’s Week:

Highlight: As much as I dislike threshold runs, they’re paying off! This week I posted two personal bests—proof that the hard work is working.

Challenge: Getting up and running on the weekend after little sleep was tough, but the runs still got done!

    Bridget’s Week:

Challenge: I’ve had to adjust the distance and effort earlier than planned due to my injury. Saturday’s long run left me feeling completely broken, but I’m pushing through.

Highlight: My patience is starting to pay off. I smashed the 1km mark in my swimming as part of cross-training 🏊‍♀️ and woke up on Sunday feeling much better—excited to accelerate the training soon!

    Your Support Makes a Difference

A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far—you’re incredible! 💙 Did you know? Just $5 this week (less than a coffee ☕- not that we would ever suggest skipping a coffee, BUT the cause is a goodie!!) can make a huge impact for MATES Matter NZ and their work in mental health.

Together, we’re building connections and showing up for each other, one step at a time. Let’s keep going, team! Bring on Week 3! 👟💪

  • Week 1 Training Update: We’re Off and Running!

      13 January 2025

We’ve officially completed the first week of our 16-week training plan for the London Marathon – yay, go us! 🎉

This week brought its fair share of challenges, but also some great wins.

    Scott’s Week:

The biggest hurdles were the heat and tackling those tough threshold runs, but persistence paid off. The highlight? The speed Scott built up over the week – such a buzz seeing the progress already!

    Bridget’s Week:

Starting the week with an injury wasn’t ideal, but I’ve got all the bases covered – physio, podiatrist, and sports massage are locked in for this month. Better to deal with this now than the week before, like what happened with the New York Marathon! My highlight was smashing my cross-training swim, doubling the distance from last week’s 30-minute session. 🏊‍♀️

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated so far – your support means the world to us! 💙 Every little bit helps MATES Matter NZ continue their incredible work, so please keep giving what you can. Even 10 cents per kilometre—just $4.20—can make a big difference.

Week 1 is in the books, and we’re feeling strong and motivated. Thanks for being part of this journey with us – bring on Week 2! 👟💪

  • 🌟 New Year, New Heights! 🌟 - Training week 0

      6 January 2025

Over the New Year’s break, we swapped the running shoes for trail shoes (or worn out trainers if you're brave like Scott!) and hit the trails to welcome 2025 with fresh air, beautiful views, and great company! First up, we conquered the Karangahake Mountain Summit, soaking in the stunning vistas and feeling that sweet sense of accomplishment at the top. Next, we tackled the majestic Wairere Falls, where the roar of the waterfall and the lush greenery reminded us just how magical nature can be. 🌿✨

These adventures were more than just great exercise—they were also a wonderful reminder of how healing it is to spend time outdoors with the people you care about. There’s something about the fresh air, the sound of birds, and the beauty of the natural world that really helps clear the mind and lift the spirit.

    (As does a yummy lunch!)

Here’s to many more walks, climbs, and moments of joy in nature this year! 🥾💚
