Everyone Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Face

Mike Tyson once said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” Marathon training—and life—proves this true. We make plans, but injuries, setbacks, and unexpected challenges force us to adapt.
Success isn’t about sticking to the original plan; it’s about adjusting when things don’t go as expected.
Mental strength isn’t just about pushing through pain—it’s about flexibility. Training for the London Marathon, I’ve had to modify my approach due to plantar fasciitis. But my injury hasn’t, and won’t, stop me. Instead, it’s taught me to listen to my body, adjust my training, and lean on experts for guidance.
Mental resilience is understanding that setbacks don’t mean failure. They mean recalibrating, getting support from the right people, and moving forward in a new way.
Life works the same way. We map out careers, relationships, and goals, but reality often shifts. True resilience means recognizing setbacks aren’t failures—they’re opportunities to recalibrate. Strength comes not from going it alone, but from seeking the right support and trusting the process.
So when life (or marathon training) punches you in the face, remember: You can always shift your strategy, find new strength, and keep going.
