Brittle Bone Disease Awareness With 300km Atlantic Ocean Row

$3,455 donated

Raising awareness for brittle bone disease by rowing 300km on a rowing machine, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a yacht.

Bay of Plenty

My niece Poppy suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) aka brittle bone disease. Poppy requires frequent hospital visits and needs infusions every six months to strengthen her bones. I would like to raise awareness for this condition as it is very close to my heart.

I would also like to support the organization that has helped my brother and sister-in-law by getting Poppy clincally and genetically diagnosed. Starship Children's Hospital looks after severe cases of OI and they also care for other rare diseases that don't have any support in NZ such as Poppy's condition.

I will be crossing the Atlantic Ocean over the coming weeks while on board a yacht. My goal is to row 300km on a rowing machine in between my two engine room watch shifts each day. This will be done over roughly two weeks and will require me to row an average of 21.5kms per day.

I will be donating an inital $1500 and my goal is to match this amount from donors.

100% of the proceeds will be going directly to the Starship Foundation.

Also if you would like to be updated on my progress, I will be posting regularly on my Instagram story once we start the crossing.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say a big thank you again to each and every one of you. My expectations were far surpassed and we raised a total of $3455 for Starship Foundation!

Poppy and the family are also very thankful for everyone who donated and helped this great cause.

I look forward to doing something like this again in the near future.

Cheers,

Jake.
