https://ticket-tribe.events/event/auckland-paperkite-it-heavy-hitters-2021/

I’m doing my part to help raise awareness and funds for the Key to Life Charitable trust, helping give New Zealanders a better shot at fighting the mental health epidemic we are suffering.

After training for the past few months at Dan Hookers Combat Academy, I’ve been booked as an official fight for the ITHeavyHitters event on May 8th.

I’ve had my fair share of battles with mental health and will continue to as a sufferer of bipolar disorder. Manic depression and suicidal thoughts were a part of my life before I started college. If it wasn’t for a friend helping me seek help in my teens I would not be here.

My main current battle that haunts me is my battle with Tourette’s Syndrome. After a concussion in 2020 my mild case became severe. Unfortunately I have uncontrollable verbal tics, one of which causes me to say “Kill Yourself” thousands of times per day.

I’m fighting this fight and sharing my story to prove that thoughts are just thoughts and that actions speak louder than words. Even though I can’t help saying these things I’m fighting back against this illness. I want to share my story and be an advocate for open conversation about mental health.

If you want to help support this cause and join me on my journey, please donate to the page, come along to the fight or attend any of the local fundraisers we are doing!

I’ll be getting in the ring May 8th for my first boxing fight. Preparing and training as part of the Red Team under coaches Dan Hooker, Jaleigh Shaw and Shane Vincent at Combat Academy.

And the Winner Is...  10 May 2021

And the winner is...

Everyone. Everyone benefits from a better culture around mental health and suicide. But on Saturday night, 36 fighters jumped in the ring to give their all for the cause.

After spending the last 2 weeks in and out of doctors clinics to prove my health after suffering a concussion 2 weeks ago I was blessed to be given clearance and the opportunity to compete. This was an opportunity to show the culmination of a 14-week training camp with one of the best coaches the world has to offer from The Combat Academy.

Knowing that this opportunity was so close to being taken away from me I really was incredibly grateful to be there and wanted to put my best on display.

My fight was against a great man in Jack Downs. We graced the ring as fight number 13 on the night. Luckily for me I was able to stop Jack in the 2nd round of the fight to claim a victory in front of my friends and family. It was an amazing night for all, with an outstanding performance by the Red Team coached by Dan Hooker walked away victors on the night with a 12-3 fight record for the night

This has been an incredible journey with many highs and lows throughout. Thank you for being at the start of my fight for mental health, by listening to my story and choosing to support this great cause you've shown that you too fight for what is right.

I'm overwhelmed to have generated donations and support of so many generous friends and family, bringing a total of over $8000 in total including late donations after the page closed on Saturday night. This is a mammoth effort and will go an incredibly long way for the Key to Life Charitable Trust!

The event total is still being counted, but looks to be set as the biggest fundraiser in the events history!

Once the videos and photos of this event go live I'll share another page update with you so you can see the action :)

In the words of my coach Dan Hooker "You have to put yourself into uncomfortable positions every single day, there will always be small micro-battles with your inner-critic telling you your not worth it or questioning what you're doing here. Don't ignore it, fight those battles and do the thing you need to when you don't want to and you will find comfort in being uncomfortable in life. The nerves you get are free energy, use it to dominate that situation instead of running from it"

Thank you again for your support. Until next time.

Kia Kaha,

Cam "Crunch" Russell
