Everesting for Lifeline - 8,848 vertical metres on a bike

  • Tomorrow is the big day!

Massive, huge thank-yous to everyone who has donated to this very important service. At the time of writing 99 people have made donations towards Lifeline! That is a huge level of support, and will be what encourages me when times get tough on this mammoth cycling challenge ahead of me tomorrow.

I've just gotten back to my offices at the youth health clinic after doing a quick interview and a bit of action shots for The Project on TV3. So tune in at 7pm, and keep your eyes opened for my navy and orange lycra as it speeds across your screen and up Maungawhau/Mt Eden.

Now is a great time to start sharing the link to this Givealittle page to all your networks, friends, and family. The fundraising page finishes up on the 14th of March, so still a bit of time after I've completed the Everesting to collect some final donations.

If you live in the Auckland area feel free to come back and cheer on sometime during the day tomorrow. I'll be starting out at 5am, and it's likely to take me around 18 hours I suspect to complete the full 8,848 vertical metres. There will definitely be tough times climbing that hill, so having some cheering from the sidelines on the steep bits would be a massive lift.

Thanks again for all the massive support everyone has shown to this.

    See you at the top!

    xMikey

  • Why Lifeline?

People are regularly asking me questions about this fundraiser. One that I hear often is "Why Lifeline?"

I've done a fair bit of fundraising for different charities over the years. But there is something entirely different about my Everesting for Lifeline fundraiser which brings tears to my eyes when I think about the important work they do. This fundraising challenge is deeply personal. I work daily as a youth health nurse with young people who feel life isn't worth living. I have lost too many friends to ever want to quantify their deaths. Mental health support and suicide prevention are hugely important things for our communities. If even one person is supported through their crisis by Lifeline because of this fundraiser, that is not only one life saved, it's an entire community of family and friends around that person who will be saved the heart shattering pain I've felt too many times. That is what makes this fundraiser so much more personal.

Huge thanks to Belinda at TootKit.com and Philippa at Tart Bakery for their support in this endeavour.

  • 200km in the saddle - Crossed the $2,000 mark

Over Waitangi Day yesterday I did my longest training ride yet, I crossed the 200km mark for the first time. It was a long day on the bike, but it has increased my confidence that I've done the hard work and my body is ready for the Everesting challenge.

On our ride we saw some of the amazing scenery on offer in this great country of Aotearoa/New Zealand. And when heading back up Great South Road we stopped off for a quick photo-op by Lifeline.

Also over the past couple days the fundraising efforts have crossed another landmark. So far to date through your support we've raised over $2,000 for lifeline. Every $100 donated will help 4 people in crisis, so with $2,000 raised that means 80 people will be supported through some very tough times.

The time is getting closer, if you can please share this fundraising page through your networks, and with your families. While it's up to me to make it the 8,848 metres up and down Maungawhau/Mt Eden, it's really going to be through support from people like you for us to reach the $10,000 fundraising target.

  • Aiming high!

Getting closer to the big day and things are falling into place with my training. Over the month of January I rode over 16,000 vertical metres, that's nearly twice the height that I'll be cycling in one effort on March 10th! 8,848 metres is the Everesting goal, and my legs feel like they are well on track to get there.

Over this past long weekend I made my way up Scenic Drive each of the three days, managing to do half the Everesting elevation over three rides. It's all about getting the hills into my training now.

I also went over and met the folk at Lifeline this week, learning more about the work they do, chatting about logistics for the big day, and looking at better ways to reach to $10,000 fundraising target. If you haven't already, please share this fundraising page through your social media accounts so we can try and reach the lofty heights of $10,000 for Lifeline. The good that can be done with this money is immense!

See you out in the hills!

  • Made it into the news!

      20 December 2017

    Hi all,

Thanks heaps for your support for Lifeline and my ill-thought-out ambition to do an Everesting up Maungawhau/Mt Eden.

I got a wee bit of media coverage to help boost things for the time being on Stuff.co.nz, check out the article here - https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/central-leader/99988489/auckland-nurse-to-cycle-the-height-of-mt-everest-for-lifeline

I'm starting to ramp up my training for the day, increasing my daily KMs, and aiming to keep my weekly KMs on the increase while I slowly start to aim at some sustained climbing. You can follow my training progress on Strava as well - https://www.strava.com/athletes/3181632
