Sunday 19th - 'D' Day - The sun was shining, the clouds waited, the nerves held; there was a bit of a shuffle in the lineup along the way, but 9 daredevil divers made it into the air - and down again safely! Thank you to all who supported on the day, and to Alheimer's Society Nelson Tasman who brought the cake for sustenance. And a huge thanks to Abel Tasman Skydive who made it all happen smoothly, calmed nerves and got everyone safely back to 'Terra Firma' (although I think it was a case of 'the more firmer, the less terror'! We'll have updates from other skydivers as they come in...

Being married to a Daisy driver can have hidden dangers - like getting roped in to join the Dementia Dive! But to be fair, he did actually volunteer! Here's what he has to say:

"Over my lifetime I have been involved in a range of activities, shepherd farmer, fencer, shearer, demolition, evaporator operator, truck driver, asbestos removal and did a few months in Queensland laying footpaths, I even worked in a circus for a few days. I have done a bit of hunting, shooting and fishing, played a bit of rugby, and travelled a bit. I have been lucky and enjoyed a healthy, varied and exciting life. During my life I have supported a number of charity organisations, as I am firmly of the opinion that we all have an obligation to maintain a social conscience, and if we all provide a little to the service of the afflicted in our society the total contribution is considerable. Mohammed Ali probably said it all when he said “Service is the rent you pay for your room here on earth”.

Thanks John; wise words, followed by crazy actions!

  • Breaking News - another 'Daisy' dares to dive!

That's right, Tracey will be joined by another Daisy, Natasha, for the Dementia Dive on Sunday. She was a little hesitant at first; well, that's not quite right - her initial response was: (and we quote)

"NO WAY! That's way too scary! I can't do that! But you know what else is scary......having Alzheimer's!!! I have been working for Driving Miss Daisy Nelson West for almost a year and have had the pleasure of being a companion to several people who are at different stages of the disease, and it's tough - tough for them, and tough for the friends and family who are watching them go through it, so if I can help a little by going outside my comfort zone to raise some money, I should.

I'm nervous, my heart is racing just thinking about it and I know there will be tears when I'm about to jump, but it's nothing that people living with Alzheimers aren't living through every day!"

Well done Tash, you'll feel great about doing it; Well, maybe on Monday!

Hello my name is Heni Brown I am a board member of the Alzheimer’s Nelson Tasman since 2017. I have been a social worker for 7 years supporting clients and their families who experience a diverse range of social and medical issues. My experience with clients and families that live with Alzheimer’s is that they are resilient and truly amazing, and this skydive aims to raise not only funds but awareness and support.

Thanks Heni, and thanks for all the work you already do with the Alzheimer's Nelson Tasman Board.

Meet Kieran Platt, Tracey's friend from her sign language class, and this is his second year supporting Tracey skydiving for Alzheimer's awareness...

    In his words;

"Hi, I'm Kieran; I'm an outgoing kind caring person and I love to help people when and where I'm needed. Why am I doing this? I supported Tracey last year and thought what she was doing was amazing and thought I would help and support her again this year."

Thanks Kieran for your support and especially joining in the jump!

Daisy Diving Squad member: Patricia Goh, pharmacist, from Dunedin, and friend of Georgia (from Ernest Rutherford and has rounded up a brave bunch of friends!) In Patricia's own words:

"Two of my grandparents were affected by Alzheimer's and I have seen what it does to people and how it affects those around them. What better way to raise awareness for dementia and have fun doing it than diving out of the sky?

Thanks Patricia, a very real connection to the 'cause'.

First up; John Hopkins; Business mentor / consultant / friend of Tracey and Rob.

    In his own words:

"I wear two hats, one working as a business coach partnering Business Success Partners NZ, and the other as the Retail Operations Manager for Nelson Tasman Hospice.

Why am I doing this? You mean why jump out of a perfectly fine aeroplane? Because it is for a great cause!"

Thanks John, great to have you on board - well, until you get thrown out of the plane, anyway!

A big shout out to Sean and Allen at Waimea Print Express, who are sponsoring us again with producing and printing our posters. Our 'launch' has been a bit slow with the lockdown, but Sean and his team have cracked into it quick smart; we'll have these up around the place asap - covid willing - and it's now officially too late for our daredevils to back out!
