September is Alzheimers Awareness Month; Tracey McConnachie (Driving Miss Daisy Nelson West) is skydiving to raise funds and awareness.
Nelson / Tasman
Around 70,000 Kiwis are living with dementia today and that's expected to more than double in the next 30 years. More than 80% of us know or have known someone with dementia. Here at Driving Miss Daisy we work closely with a number of organisations to provide support in the way of both transport and 'companion driving' - providing a fully accompanied outing.
Tracey McConnachie has done a skydive before; loved it, but vowed once in a lifetime is more than enough! But given the importance of the work that Alzheimers Society Nelson does, she believes they need all the support they can get, hence the offer to defy death and 'dive for Dementia'.
Funds raised will help to:
Provide vital, up-to-date information and resources
Educate people on living well with dementia
Raise awareness and reduce the stigma of dementia
Stand up for the rights and needs of people with dementia
Provide practical support to people with dementia, through our network of local Alzheimers organisations
We hope this fundraising effort will encourage people to give generously to this year's campaign; our thanks go to local businesses that are already contributing services, resources and time;
Abel Tasman Skydive, Waimea Print Express, and Jared Ewers from Eclipse Hair Design.
Please give generously!
Almost daily, the Driving Miss Daisy team are in contact with someone with, or affected by, Dementia. With support from local businesses, Tracey is fundraising for Alzheimer's Awareness Month with a skydive - your donations will help settle the nerves!
A Huge Thankyou to Everyone! 30 September 2020
I want to thank everyone for their backing; we've had help and support from Heather at Alzheimers Society Nelson Tasman, Blair at the Breeze, Sean and the team at Waimea Print Express, Jared from Eclipse Hair, and of course, Stacey and the team at Skydive Abel Tasman.
And thank you so much for all your generous donations! We nearly made the $2000, but the total is still huge and will be a big help to the practical work that Alzheimers Society does in the Nelson Tasman area.
I'm not sure what I can do next year, but the Skydive Abel Tasman people have put out a daunting challenge; - watch this space...!
