Raising money for the Ovarian Cancer Foundation NZ through the 10km walk at the Dunedin Marathon
Dunedin, Otago
Last October, I was very unexpectedly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. What followed was some of the most agonising and frightening months of my life. I am beyond lucky enough to now be cancer-free.
So during September, which is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, seemed like the perfect time to really give back. One New Zealander dies every day from a gynaecological cancer. It's an incredibly underfunded and under-diagnosed group of cancers; ovarian cancer itself has a survival rate of only 37%.
Before my diagnosis and all of my treatments and surgeries, I was really fit and active. While I might be some time away from getting back there, I'm certainly on my way. To pay respect to that progress, I'm participating in the 10km walk of the Dunedin Marathon to raise money for ovarian cancer.
Every dollar donated will go towards aiding those suffering one of the worst things a person can go through, and if I can help just one person, then that will be beyond worth it.
Thank you for your support!

The Ovarian Cancer Foundation NZ does fantastic support and advocacy work for Kiwis who are suffering with ovarian cancer. They were kind enough to let me use their channels to share a piece I wrote about my own ovarian cancer journey.
10km completed! Thanks for your support 15 September 2024
10km done and dusted! I’d tell you a walking joke, but it’s a bit pedestrian 🥁 My official time was 01:43, but you can shave a few minutes off that for the faffing about I did at the end when I was hugging my family and friends like the softie I am.
I can’t articulate how appreciative and humbled I am by people’s support and generosity with their donations, I could seriously weep. With a whopping $1,700 raised, the Ovarian Cancer Foundation NZ will be able to put this towards their support and research projects, no doubt easing the suffering of some brave person experiencing something so horrible.
I am so thankful, for people’s kindness and for the luck to survive and be here to do this walk. F*ck cancer!
