Everesting for Harbour Hospice

  • What a Day!

      1 November 2020

Wow, thank you to everyone who donated to date and reached that $5000 goal! Think it was reached when I just had a few laps to go, and spurred me on to get there in a still to be confirmed 14 hours and 12 minutes.

HUGE thank you to those who came out and supported today, helped with food, drinks and just generally cheering me on. This goes out especially to the residents of Colonial Road whose cheers and support got me through the day.

Time for a bit of rest now for me, but I will write up a full report in the near future.

    Thanks again to you all!

    Tom

We are coming up 24 hours until the start of the ride and I have spent the day prepping and planning. I have a partner for the ride now, Mike Conza, hopefully we motivate each other to keep going!

My car is loaded, whiteboard prepped for counting laps, reminder count on the bike, clothes in bags for all conditions... Just have to wait to start now!

Tomorrow my progress should be able to be tracked on https://www.wahooligan.com/users/live/jNnbzlUxm3a_kY7iI9uShQ?fbclid=IwAR2Cv6aPXMapLd4G4TfT_Voy5cWDXpJ34DyQGIsaj_1con6oxT282PPm60Y

  • Weather update

On this day in 2017 I rode for the first time, the K2 cycle challenge. It was wet, miserable, my brakes started to fail...I have learnt a lot since then! The weather this weekend (thanks to metservice) looks pretty good. Everything brings its challenges - cloudy means it won't be as light so early, might be cooler (pro and a con) Chance of showers - might dampen the spirits. All in all I think it will be a great day!

Set up for the day will start on Friday with getting some signage out there and setting up some of the stuff.

If you are coming down on the day, there are a couple of places to park and obviously the Chelsea Sugar Works Cafe has refreshments :-)

Not going to lie, did just look at the weather and let loose a little whoop.

    1 WEEK TO GO!!!!!

Whilst timings are subject to mechanical issues, weather and just how I feel, this has formed part of my planning too. If you are planning to come down, it might give you an idea of how much hurt I am in! Planned breaks vary in times too, from 5 to 20 minutes depending on what I plan to eat and whether I have to change clothes!

Remember to get other to donate too!

  • Lessons learnt

    10 DAYS TO GO!!!

On the 3rd October I completed a Virtual Everesting where I completed 8848m of gain in the virtual world of Zwift in the comfort of my garage 🏆. 5 lessons learnt whilst I completed this very different climb and situation, I hope I can apply to the real thing.

    1. All the planning can sometimes not come together - it is a test of your resilience. I had issues with my streaming and connectivity to devices that had to be resolved during the ride thanks to my wife connecting her Ipad to my trainer! 🤦. I may have lost some time and energy, but it was never the end of the world

    2. It can be a very dark ride, but darkness enjoys company - Whilst only a portion is ridden in darkness, and in the garage it was always light, you can find yourself in a dark place where it hurts and you are very tired. The biggest thing that pulled me through my dark time was having other people. Although only on a conference call or a post on you tube, it really helped.

    3. EAT when you are hungry, DRINK before you get thirsty. - There is no restrictions to what you eat and drink, but if you don't listen to your body when you are hungry you will run flat. If you don't pump yourself full of fluids constantly, you will get dehydrated.🍕

    4. SMILE - Forcing a smile, even when you don't want to helps raise your mental spirit and makes it easier to keep pushing. Also looks better when people are watching / taking photos 📸

    5. Remembering Why - There is nothing like remembering why you are pushing yourself in this way to help get you to the end. It is very emotional, and using the strong memories and the cause that this is all for helps dig that little deeper and push past the challenges.

Thank you to all who have supported me this far and those who are coming on board🚵‍♂️🚵‍♂️🚵‍♂️

  • Sherpas

Part of the planning for Everesting is having the support. Having people to ride up and down with you (Sherpas), having conversations, handing you some food and drink going to be key. Some of the deep and dark holes can be lifted out of just by hearing a friendly voice of seeing a smile. Some people have already signed up to give me support by doing some riding alongside and if sounds like something you would like to do, message me! Otherwise, the more the merrier on the road for cheering me on :-) Thank you everyone for your support.

Took a walk on Colonial Road to make sure the residents know that the event is planned to take place on the 31st - TWO WEEKS AWAY!!!!!

We don't want to inconvenience them, but being aware that Tom and others will be going up and down multiple times hopefully means they can keep an eye out. Also if they want to come out and cheer, they are in a prime location :-) This is yesterdays shot from a few laps of the hill

  • Day of mourning

Today Isabel Marshall lost her battle with cancer. Whilst we mourn the loss of her from this world we must also be grateful. Grateful for all the knowledge, love and support she shared with us, but also for the support she received. She spent her last few days Harbour Hospice north shore and they were fantastic in their care for her as well as helping those around her. Thank you all for your support too.
