Fundraising for Sir John Kirwan Foundation

Nationwide

In September 2017, I experienced a neurological event that led to hearing & vision changes, mobility and sensory issues. I was diagnosed with Clinically Isolated Syndrome, often the first sign of Multiple Sclerosis. I had to relearn things I had totally taken for granted like walking, reading, writing & driving.

Today, I’m a Coach with Mitey - Sir John Kirwan Foundation. Mitey is a research based, school-wide approach to mental health education for Kiwi kids from yrs 1-8. Teaching and learning about mental health and developing skills, knowledge & understanding to recognise and respond to your own mental health & wellbeing needs and of those around you is so important, particularly when life throws you some curlies! I know that my own understanding about mental health and wellbeing absolutely helped me to navigate my journey – then & now.

On Fri 13th Sep I'll be collecting for the MS Society during their annual MS Awareness Week. If you'd like to support their work in research & assistance for those affected by MS, please donate to one of the street collectors or online.

On Sun 15th Sep, I will participate in the Hutt Half Marathon. I’m using the opportunity to fundraise for the Sir John Kirwan Foundation to support the important mahi we’re doing for our teachers & students in NZ schools through Mitey. I may not be the fastest walker, but finishing 21km will be a great achievement & a fabulous way to mark seven wobbly years (mostly) upright!

Thank you for your support!

I've learnt something!  22 August 2024

My physio has been talking to me about ‘acute vs chronic load ratio’.

The acute vs chronic workload ratio (ACWR) is the ratio between how much workload has been done in the last 7 days (acute workload) versus the average weekly workload that has been performed over the previous 28 days (chronic workload). Your ACWR lets you know if your training is in balance and if your load is changing too quickly (therefore putting you in an injury-risk zone). The ’sweet spot’ is an ACWR of 0.8 – 1.2.

So doing ‘practice’ walks the same length of the event, although good for my morale and motivation, is not so great on my ACWR as it hikes it up. Steadily increasing within the ideal zone means I’ll be physically ready and able, with considerably less risk of injury.

I’ve discovered an online calculator which makes it so much easier. It tells me overall what my ideal distance should be this week, and what my ACWR was for the last week. Great tool!

Thanks for your donations. All proceeds go to a great cause ...
