Fundraising for the Karioi Project - Te Whakaoranga O Karioi - to restore biodiversity and bring back the birdsong on Karioi and beyond.
Raglan, Waikato
Imagine kiwi, kereru and kākā right on your doorstep and penguins waddling down the beach! A forest alive with birdsong and our kids enjoying the rewards of decades of hard work - the restoration of our unique mountain to sea landscape.
Thank you to all you legends that have supported this campaign for the BIRDS!
Although we have reached our target - EVERY EXTRA DOLLAR DONATED ADDS MORE HECTARES OF PROTECTION and restored biodiversity on our beautiful maunga!
The Karioi Project is a community-led biodiversity restoration project connecting people to nature, and inspiring them to care for it through landscape-scale predator control, seabird monitoring, and environmental education.
Beyond the mountain to the sea, the Karioi Project links two maunga, three harbours, wetlands and streams to protect biodiversity on more than 23,000 ha.
With thousands of hours of volunteer input and massive support from our community - landowners and backyard trappers, the Karioi Project has managed predators on Karioi for over a decade and now seabirds and forest birds are returning to breeding status in the area.
Initiated by Te Whakaoranga O Karioi with members of Tainui o Tainui hapū and Ngati Whakamarurangi hapū, A Rocha is one of the project partners, alongside Whāingaroa Environment Centre, DOC, Waikato Regional Council and Whāingaroa/Raglan community.
Help us keep the good work going! 13 September 2022
Kia ora e te whānau o Karioi,
We hope you are safe and well.
A few months ago we reached out to our community to back the Karioi Project through the “For the Birdsong” crowdfunding campaign. We were hugely grateful and humbled by the support we received. We want to thank all of you once again for your generous donation.
With these funds we have been able to continue expanding and maintaining a decade of predator control and biodiversity restoration and all this is doing great things for the wildlife and birdsong in Whāingaroa / Raglan. We want to keep doing everything we can to restore our little corner of the world.
Alongside this work we also deliver environmental education to over 200 young people in our community each year through a variety of programmes and we host numerous students from outside our region too.
However, funding continues to be a challenge and our programmes are growing and are in more demand than ever. We don't want to slow down - we want to continue to expand the work that we, together with over 130 regular local volunteers that contribute thousands of volunteer hours, have achieved to date.
More sustainable funding would help us continue the expansion work we started in 2022, so if you can, then please set up a regular donation to keep the good work going! If you are able please donate here: https://www.karioiproject.co.nz/donate
Thank you so much for all your support!
